SM Prime and DENR support Manila Bay cleanup efforts with high-tech trash boats

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga (middle) receives the symbolic key to a catamaran donated by SM Prime, boosting Manila Bay cleanup efforts.

In a joint effort for Manila Bay, SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), was present for the handover of a state-of-the-art catamaran trash boat to complement the ongoing battle against water pollution. DENR received the boat last January 31, along with essential navigation and safety equipment as well as cleaning tools. The 30-foot catamaran will be operated by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office - South Zone and will contribute to the agency's capacity to combat water pollution and preserve the vital marine ecosystem.

This donation strengthens the DENR's arsenal in its multifaceted approach to cleaning Manila Bay. The catamaran will enable more efficient removal of floating debris and waste, contributing to the broader effort to improve water quality and restore the bay's ecological health. The partnership with SM Prime exemplifies the power of public-private collaborations in tackling complex environmental challenges.

"This catamaran represents our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and our belief in the power of collaboration to create a sustainable future for our communities." ~Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President

Emphasizing the shared vision of both organizations. SM Prime's contribution complements the DENR's ongoing initiatives, including the Paranaque Adopt-a-River project, and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving lasting environmental improvements.

The presence of DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and other DENR officials emphasized the agency's commitment to leveraging partnerships to achieve its environmental goals. The catamaran will play a crucial role in the DENR's continued efforts to protect Manila Bay from pollution and preserve its valuable resources for future generations. This collaboration serves as a model for how public and private sectors can work together to address pressing environmental concerns and create a healthier environment.

Home Credit Philippines host PFIP Q4 Membership Meeting, strengthens commitment to DEIB

Home Credit Philippines (HCPH), the country's leading consumer finance company, demonstrated its commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) by hosting the Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride (PFIP) Q4 Membership Meeting and Fellowship Night.

The event focused on DEIB innovations, problem-solving strategies, and how DEIB can be integrated into organizational sustainability.  It also provided an opportunity to induct new members of the organization, as well as present the third Philippine Bahaghari closeout report and Rainbow Youth Academy Cycle 3 Updates.

A roundtable discussion titled Evolving Pride: The New Challenges and Opportunities for DEIB and Pride Network Leaders was a highlight of the event.  The session was moderated by Russel Jude Patina, Senior Public Relations Manager and Vice President for External Affairs of the Pride Club at HCPH, and featured distinguished panelists such as Joseph Magadan, Delivery Lead Manager of Accenture Philippines; Josh Calzo, Co-Chair of Rainbow Lions Philippines at ING Philippines; April Soriano, Associate Client Services Manager-Core Recruiting & Service Excellence at IBM Consulting; and Janlee Dungca, Managing Director of Castro Com.

The panel discussed critical topics such as the role of inclusive technology and data-driven DEIB strategies, overcoming barriers to DEIB success, aligning DEIB initiatives with organizational and ESG goals, and ensuring community leadership and cross-functional support.

“Discussions like these are vital in driving meaningful change within organizations and creating a more inclusive and equitable society. At Home Credit, we are honored to host this event, as it aligns with our values as an equal-opportunity employer and our ongoing commitment to championing DEIB in the workplace. Through initiatives like this, we continue to empower individuals and foster a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. We are grateful for the insightful discussions during this event, as they provide valuable learnings that will continue to guide our journey in strengthening DEIB at Home Credit. While we have implemented and sustained numerous DEIB initiatives, we recognize that much work still needs to be done. Home Credit remains fully committed to advocating for DEIB, and we will continue to strive toward creating a workplace where everyone is valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.” ~Nina Patricia Dacanay, People Partner of HCPH

HCPH has been actively working on its DEIB efforts, implementing initiatives to ensure a working environment in which all employees feel valued, respected, and given equal opportunities.  Dacanay's Pride-DEI knowledge-sharing session highlighted the company's efforts for workplace inclusion, initiatives to advance gender equality and LGBTQIA+ advocacy, and collaborations with organizations to strengthen DEI policies and programs.

Strengthening DEIB strategies and leadership development

The discussions emphasized the importance of organizations integrating DEIB as a core strategic priority in order to promote inclusivity and drive innovation.  The panelists emphasized the importance of using data and key performance indicators to assess the impact of business resource groups.  They also emphasized the importance of enabling self-identification options, which give organizations insights into their diversity efforts.  Regulatory frameworks, compliance, and technology have been identified as key drivers of DEIB initiatives.

Supporting professional development and LGBTQ+ rights

On leadership development, the panelists discussed actively involving and educating executives in DEIB efforts, as well as ensuring their continued engagement through workplace inclusion data and reporting.  Leaders were encouraged to prepare for generational shifts by empowering younger generations, such as Gen Z and Gen Alpha, to spearhead the next wave of DEIB advocates.

The event also highlighted initiatives that promote professional development and LGBTQ+ rights.  Attendees were encouraged to look into scholarship opportunities, such as the ASEAN Chevening Scholarship, which supports forward-thinking leaders committed to driving positive change in the Philippines.  This scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, and other essential costs.

The Right to Care Card, a significant step toward LGBTQ+ rights, was also discussed.  This program, which started in Quezon City, gives queer couples the legal right to make healthcare decisions for their partners.  The initiative, which is set to expand to other cities, aims to provide the LGBTQ+ community with broader legal recognition and protections.

“PFIP’s mission is to be the leading voice and champion of workplace inclusion in the Philippines. Our vision, our ultimate goal, is to have limitless career options for LGBTQ+ professionals.” ~Chris Eugenio, PFIP’s Board Advisor

Since November 2023, HCPH has been a proud member of PFIP, a nonprofit community consisting of LGBTQ+ employee resource groups and human resource representatives from private sector firms in the country. Through this partnership, Home Credit Philippines has actively contributed to the LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion Survey and integrated best practices from PFIP’s recently published Playbook for LGBT+ Inclusive Workplaces in the Philippines.

Last February 15, several lucky Park visitors had the opportunity to share their own Forever Enchanted Love Stories at the Bandstand during the annual Hug-A-Palooza event. Eldar and Princess Victoria joined the crowd for the event's highlight, the hugging tradition.

Following the Hug-A-Palooza, the featured guests were given exclusive gifts and escorted to EK's own restaurants, LaunchTime and Amazon Grill, for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner.

Last February 21 and 22, violinist Dominique Casacop serenaded everyone in Victoria Park, further spreading the Valentine's Day spirit. On their grand fans day last February 23 at the Bandstand, Sofia Pablo and Allen Ansay, stars of the Sparkle GMA Artist Center, also spread more kilig at the Park.

Park visitors can record their enchanted moments with their loved ones at the vibrant Forever Enchanted Photowall, which is close to the Rialto 4D.

Scroll through the streets of Brooklyn Place at night and fall in love with the vibrant display set to classic romantic ballads at the Forever Enchanted Love Symphony, which runs from Friday to Sunday.

To complete your romantic EK itinerary, EK has reinstated Forever Love: Enchanting Dinner in the Sky for all weekends in February.  This iconic Valentine's Day offering provided a unique dining experience for groups and couples while riding the Wheel of Fate.

The cabin bag should be no larger than 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm, and the small bag should not exceed 30 cm x 40 cm x 10 cm. Both must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin. If your unchecked baggage exceeds the 7 kg limit, you may purchase additional weight allowance in advance to avoid higher fees at the airport.

How the UP men's football team expresses their love for their happy and healthy dogs

UP Men’s Football Team (UPMFT) makes sure their furbabies are in the best shape with the help of their trusted pet care product, TopBreed

On a bright Monday morning, the UP Men's Football Team (UPMFT) gathered in the dugout to eat breakfast and catch up with their teammates as they planned a fun day ahead.  Instead of their usual drills, they're wearing uniforms and playing football with dogs on the field.

It's a change of pace for a group that trains nearly every day while also pursuing their studies.  It is expected of the former UAAP football champions.  But this time, they're bonding over their shared love of dogs, taking turns assisting their teammates in watching over them.

UPMFT's pet parents understand what it's like to come home to a happy dog after a long day of training and schooling.  When their teammates meet the dogs, they get to experience the same positive energy.  Furthermore, thanks to the team's partnership with pet care brand TopBreed, student-athletes can feed their pets high-quality food.

Finding comfort in dogs

Football, like any other sport, can be physically demanding.  The pressure to represent one's university can also exacerbate the challenge.  So, it's critical for UPMFT student athletes to find their zen, and one way they can do so is by spending time with their dogs.

“All of our dogs are always happy when we come home. I hug all of them.” ~Jared Florendo, Defender

Defender Jared Florendo has six dogs, all of whom are “malambing.”

“They’re just always there when you need them. TopBreed is a reliable and trustworthy brand. Our dogs gained weight when we started feeding them TopBreed. We also saw that they’re happier and have more energy to play” ~Ken Saludez, Winger and defender

Dogs can also help people get out of the house more, especially if they need to relax after assignments and training.  This is what winger and defender Ken Saludez does with his three dogs: Coco the Shih Tzu, Churro the Mini Poodle, and Cola the Labrador.  He explains that walking and bathing dogs are family activities for them, emphasizing that this is how they bond on weekends.

“My brothers and I are all athletes, so we love playing with Bigol whenever we’re home. I remember that I cried while studying and Bigol comforted me. I just hugged him until I was able to fall asleep.” ~Florenz Tacardon, Forward

More importantly, dogs can provide comfort to their owners, giving a calm presence when things become too overwhelming. For forward Florenz Tacardon and his brothers, their Beagle named Bigol’s “kulit” personality always perks them up when they’re tired.

He also shares how Bigol became a source of comfort when a close teammate passed away two years ago.

Forward Josh Garces, who’s originally from Cebu, says he misses being able to talk to his dogs, Twix the Shih Tzu and Tisoy the Pug, when he needs someone to vent to “even though they don’t answer.”

High-quality products for the best dogs

Dogs have an unrivalled capacity for love.  Although pets and playtime are often sufficient rewards, it is even better to provide them with high-quality dog food that provides overall nutrition, such as TopBreed Dog Food for Adult and Puppy.

All of the UPMFT players report that their previously picky dogs instantly adored TopBreed.  They noticed that their dogs looked healthier and were more active.

“I sent over bags of TopBreed back home in Cebu. Whenever my parents send me photos of our dogs, I can see that they look healthy.” ~Josh Garces, Forward

Every great student-athlete is supported by loving family members and affectionate dogs who will never leave their side.  As the UPMFT players discovered, sometimes all they need to get by in their spare time is the playful nature of dogs - and TopBreed helps keep the furbabies in top condition.

TopBreed, a high-quality kibble for adult dogs and puppies, is from food manufacturing giant, Universal Robina Corporation (URC). The pet care brand recently earned the “Brand of the Year Award in the Dry Kibble Category” from the World Branding Awards in London.
