Ilocos is captured in Drone and it's Breathtaking

A Philippine region that fuses the beauty of nature and our history together, Ilocos is given a fresh and exciting perspective by awesome Videographer Christer Isulat. With his drone and hand-held camera, he went to shoot the key destinations in Vigan, Laoag, and Pagudpud.

The preserved architecture of Calle Crisologo, Bantay Tower, Quirino Bridge, and the dancing lights fountain are some of the spectacles documented for Vigan. The sand dunes in Laoag lets you have an exciting time aboard a monster 4x4 and unlimited sandboarding time. Laoag is also the home of Malacanang of the North as well as Paoay Church. Pagudpud is famous for its windmills, Patapat Viaduct, Dos Hermanos Islands, Saud Beach, Blue Lagoon, Burgos Lighthouse, and Bantay Abot Cave.

These destinations are an easy visit with the three main provinces easily accessible from one another.
This video was in collaboration with Biyaheroes and Partas Transport Company with hopes of encouraging tourists to visit these commute-friendly destinations and to take public transport when visiting. Instead of a very long drive, Biyaheroes lets commuters book and even choose their bus seats online, saving everyone from the hassle and the stress of planning their trips. They are in partnership with Partas that offers direct and roundtrip Manila to Vigan, Laoag, and Pagudpud buses with terminals in Pasay, Sampaloc, and Cubao.

With the blazing heat of the sun and the longing to see provinces that offer everything from history, adventure, and food trips, why not escape and book your Ilocos bus tickets now? Laoag na magdalawang isip pa! :)

Jollibee Foods Corporation Mounts Employee-led Mangrove Reforestation Project

Protecting shorelines. Last year, 212 employee volunteers participated in a string of tree-planting activities. The photo shows some Jollibee employees who volunteered planting mangrove propagules in Lemery, Batangas.

Through the Jollibee Group Foundation, Inc. (JGF), the corporate social responsibility arm of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), it is still driving change. JGF led a mangrove reforestation program that included a series of tree-planting events that took place in three coastal provinces.

Employees of JFC have planted nearly 4,000 mangrove trees: 1,700 seedlings in Lemery, Batangas, and 2,250 mangrove propagules along the coastlines of Carmen, Cebu, and Alaminos, Pangasinan.

To bolster its commitment to expand its Mangrove Reforestation project in 2024, Jollibee Foods Corporation and Jollibee Group Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Environment and National Resources (DENR). Present during the signing were (L-R) Jollibee Group Foundation’s President and Executive Director Gisela Tiongson, Jollibee Foods Corporation’s President and CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, and Jollibee Foods Corporation’s Vice President and Head of Public Affairs, Atty. Raul Academia

The reforestation project, according to JGF President Gisela Tiongson, is a component of JFC's stepped-up efforts to further its global sustainability agenda, Joy for Tomorrow, in keeping with the goal under the Planet pillar to support responsible planet-stewardship.

“JFC’s 45th anniversary last year marked a special milestone that inspired us to step up our effort in creating value for our stakeholders and in giving back to the environment. Through this mangrove reforestation program, we aim to help restore the mangrove ecosystem and build a more resilient future for our fellow Filipinos living in coastal communities. We are grateful for their assistance and for guiding us throughout the activities, as well as the People’s Organization in Cebu for the mangrove seedlings. ~Gisela Tiongson, JGF President

Strengthening collaboration

JGF has worked with national agencies and local community partners to ensure that mangrove planting activities are carried out correctly, with the right species planted in the correct location and season—all of which are critical to ensuring mangrove survival and propagation.

Tiongson acknowledged the assistance offered by DENR SCIS-Strategic Alliance and Environmental Partnership Division, DENR-Environmental Management Bureau, DENR Region 7, City Environment & Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Cebu City and Carmen, and CENRO Calaca, Batangas.

Fostering employee engagement

More than 200 staff members from Jollibee, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Zenith Foods Corporation, and Jollibee Worldwide Services Logistics participated in the reforestation program when it began in 2023. This was a part of JFC's 45th anniversary celebrations as well as the company's employee engagement program.

On April 19, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, JFC President and CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong, and JGF President and CEO Tiongson signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the project.

“We are cognizant of the climate emergency we are in, and hence, we are taking steps to contribute to climate mitigation in the work of JGF, together with the company. To this end, we will be investing in mangrove reforestation initiatives with the help of our employee volunteers. And we will be supporting communities in mangrove management. mobilize volunteer employees to participate in the conduct of environmental programs and activities in mangrove reforestation and extend its support to community-based mangrove protection and reforestation activities.” ~Ernesto Tanmantiong, JFC’s President and CEO

Treating the Planet Responsibly. Zenith Foods Corporation and Red Ribbon – Mandaue City employee volunteers plant mangrove propagules in Carmen, Cebu.

This year, JGF intends to expand the knowledge, expertise, and skill set of JFC staff members beyond their job duties by working toward establishing the project as an ongoing program. JGF also intends to carry out mangrove planting operations in Visayas and Mindanao under strict community management in order to further expand the nation's mangrove habitat.

Whole-Of-Asia, Whole-Of-Society needed to fight cyber threats in the Asia region

Attending the joint meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Technical Working Group, leaders of the Philippine Cybersecurity and Data Protection Communities of Practice emphasize how critical it is for all public and private sector organizations to collaborate in order to combat cyber threats in the Asia-Pacific region.

“A harmonious whole-of-Asia and whole-of-society approach to fight cyber threats in the region has to be orchestrated among government and private sector leaders in ASEAN and Japan, along with other countries in the region. Asian countries face the same threats, and all countries attending confirmed that their respective government’s digital infrastructure along with Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) are also being attacked constantly by international and even local threat actors. When government and private sector organizations work hand-in-hand to fight cyber threats, citizens will benefit the most. We already see the positive dynamics and impact of this cybersecurity community in the region.” ~Lito Averia, President of the Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PH-CERT)

According to PH-CERT and NADPOP estimates, 180,000 certified and skilled cybersecurity professionals are required in the Philippines in order to effectively and pro-actively safeguard the nation's critical infrastructure. According to both communities, the Philippines also needs a comparable number of professionals with training and validation in Data Privacy and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC).

“The constantly increasing cyber attacks on government digital ecosystems and CIIs call for nations in the Asia region to establish concrete solutions such as an Information Exchange Network which will serve as a cyber weather station that will receive, verify, then send out threat alerts to everyone that will impacted in the region. In parallel, each country should continue to produce new cybersecurity professionals and to upskill current cybersecurity and information security personnel that are already working in government and private organizations. What is emerging through these meetings is a regional force for good that will serve as a shield for countries and citizens against threat actors, who are now using AI in their attacks. We are inviting all active Communities of Practice in the region to collaborate with our regional community, the AJCCA, as threat actors are also organized in their actions. During these times, we truly need a whole-of-region, whole-of-society, and even whole-of-community cooperation to effectively respond to cyber threats.” ~Sam Jacoba, Founding President of the National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP), and PH-CERT Vice President

In addition, PH-CERT and NADPOP will be present at the fifth board meeting of the recently established ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Community Alliance (AJCCA). This community event is being held in conjunction with the 2024 2nd ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Working Group Meeting, which is being hosted and organized by the Cambodian government.

The importance of peaceful cooperation amongst nations in the region is highlighted by the 2nd Joint Government-Industry-Academia (J-GIA) CA meeting between AJCCA and government cybersecurity representatives from ASEAN and Japan, with a focus on the five pillars of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) published by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity Building, and Cooperation are the five pillars of cybersecurity.

The primary result of these quarterly regional meetings, according to Averia and Jacoba, will be the launch of collaborative initiatives between the public and private sectors. The primary weaknesses in each nation and the region as a whole in the GCI Cybersecurity Pillars can be filled by these initiatives.

The Jollibee Group is the only company with its headquarters in the Philippines to win this distinction.

Globally, the GEWA encompasses 2.7 million workers across 100,000 teams. Based on rigorous and in-depth workplace research conducted by Gallup, it recognizes and rewards top-tier companies that embed engagement into their work culture.

“This recognition was made possible by the countless men and women of the Jollibee Group around the world who contribute and shape our uniquely joyful work culture. Our three-time recognition is timely as it comes at the heels of our best year yet in 2023: a clear manifestation that our business success is deeply interconnected with our people’s success. Gallup Chief Executive Officer Jon Clifton congratulated winning organizations for redefining what it means to be a great place to work amid continuing workplace challenges.

“Your commitment to creating environments where employees are listened to, valued, and positioned to use their strengths every day is what sets you apart. Thank you for setting a new global standard in what it means to be a thriving workplace.” ~Jon Clifton, Gallup Chief Executive Officer

A Joyful Work Environment

Jollibee Group’s strengthened People Agenda was key to its record business performance, which was characterized by back-to-back best-ever years in 2022 and 2023.

Watsons volunteer moms bring their compassionate hearts and healing hands to communities through their dedicated volunteer work

Watsons employees and mom volunteers gather at the Alagang Pangkalusugan Medical Mission in Camarines Sur

A Watsons Alagang Pangkalusugan medical mission requires a village to execute. Physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals are volunteers. Additionally, Watsons extends an invitation to its supplier partners to observe the work being done in the communities and donate medications and medical supplies. Then there are the Watsons staff volunteers who, rather than sleeping and spending time with their families, use their days off to give back.

Many of the volunteers for Watsons are mothers. Good volunteers often possess patience and leadership qualities; if anyone possesses these qualities above all others, it's a mother.

Volunteering is a commitment for Watsons moms who participate in Alagang Pangkalusugan medical missions. Alagang Pangkalusugan has helped more than 6,500 Filipinos since 2013. Watsons takes great pride in helping Filipino families on their path to optimal health.

Editha Aguila, also known as "Meg," has worked for Watsons for eight years. Last year, she began working as a volunteer for a medical mission.

“It is my 2nd year this year in Watsons with MNDC Metro Naga Development Council but in my store, we already conducted simple community services to the elderly way back in 2017.  We would share our time and help provide the elderly with essential needs and also gave them food from our Christmas caroling fund. I am a mother too, I felt the same pain and anxiety of the mother's patient. I will lead them to the attending doctor and if ever they need my advice on how to interpret the prescription, I will help them so they may be guided correctly. I am sad that because of poverty,  they cannot have regular check-ups for their kids. Their kids are malnourished. I always tell them to take care of their children and give them proper care. I also remind them about giving the kids healthy food and vitamins.” ~Editha “Meg” Aguila, a Watsons store manager and mother of three

One of Aguila’s most memorable experiences as a volunteer was when the medical mission went to her hometown of Libmanan. But for Aguila, it’s even more special and poignant when they work with children.

Eden Valenzuela, a Watsons employee for over 13 years now and a pharmacy manager, also considers it a privilege to be working with children.

Joan Pacio, a pharmacy manager who has been with Watsons for 21 years, said her civic duty and faith in the common good are what motivate her to volunteer.

Joan Pacio, a pharmacy manager who has been with Watsons for 21 years, said her civic duty and faith in the common good are what motivate her to volunteer.

“Helping other people is a life fulfilling duty. It is also fulfilling to help meet the health needs of the less privileged especially in far-flung barangays.” ~Joan Pacio, a pharmacy manager who has been with Watsons for 21 years

For Meg Aguila, her motivation is to help others and make an impact on the lives of the beneficiaries.

Eden Valenzuela said she is happy to see the happy faces of people when they have free check-ups and medication.

“We have been seeing a rise in employee participation in support of  Alagang Pangkalusugan in each area as more and more patients benefit from this initiative. We’re very happy that our employees are taking part in this.” ~Sharon Decapia, Watsons Senior AVP for Marketing, PR & Sustainability

Watsons’ social purpose tagline "Look Good Do Good Feel Great" has been guiding the company in inspiring its employees and customers on their sustainability goals. This social purpose is in the company’s DNA. The spirit of doing good is deeply ingrained in the Watsons' culture. In 1841, A.S. Watsons founder Alexander Skirving Watson provided free medicine to the needy in the first dispensary.

You can help support Watsons medical missions by visiting any Watsons store near you or shop online via Watsons App.
