The business development program at BPI assists new businesses

OhMi Krafts, one of the winners of SEAL-BEGIN, customizes souvenirs from polymer clays, beads, wood, and succulents.

The top 40 small businesses and top 20 nanobusinesses from this year's Small Enterprise Acceleration Lab (SEAL) program were recently revealed by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), in collaboration with Bayan Academy, through its social development division, the BPI Foundation (BPIF).

The SEAL Project Series was established in 2022 with the goal of empowering aspiring entrepreneurs as well as micro and nano businesses. For small business owners hoping to grow and maintain their operations, SEAL has emerged as a ray of hope thanks to its strategic interventions and practical advice.

Over 200 entrepreneurs received priceless training in marketing, operations optimization, and product and service development over the course of the last year from the SEAL-Small Enterprise Growth Agenda (SEAL-SEGA). Beyond merely imparting knowledge, the program provided customized solutions that tackled particular issues these companies encountered. In addition to receiving knowledge, top-performing businesses also benefited from financial grants and professional mentoring to support their expansion.

This year, BPIF gave cash grants ranging from Php80,000 to Php120,000 to 40 businesses that demonstrated exceptional potential. These companies will continue to gain from continuous mentoring now that they have the authority to carry out their strategic plans.

The SEAL-Business Education and Growth Initiative for Nano-entrepreneurs (SEAL-BEGIN) is a new track that BPIF launched this year. In order to assist aspiring entrepreneurs, SEAL-BEGIN offered basic training and resources, emphasizing the integration of digital-age opportunities.

Over 240 registrants took part in SEAL-BEGIN, and 20 nano-enterprises were honored for their creative ideas and promising potential. After receiving training in entrepreneurship, the participants were urged to use government and local resources to further their business endeavors.

“We have witnessed the entrepreneurs’ determination through the program, and we’re excited to see how they will scale their businesses in the future. It has been an honor to be part of their journey. BPI Foundation is committed to empowering small enterprises, and we believe that with the right support, these entrepreneurs can significantly contribute to economic growth and financial inclusion. We look forward to seeing their continued success as they transform their visions into reality.” ~Carmina Marquez, BPIF Executive Director

Keep the FLAMES burning this Valentine’s Day and protect yourself from scammers

Remember the FLAMES—Friends, Lovers, Anger, Marriage, Engagement (Enemy for some), Soulmates—game in the 90’s? It was a popular pen and paper pastime among young teens. They would name their ‘crush’ and be able to ‘predict’ their future by playing with the letters that make up the name.

Fast forward to this day and age, “FLAMES” can guide adults and teens alike. But this time on a more serious note.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) presents a ‘FLAMES’ way—of protecting against scammers.

“No one can really predict when and how a scammer attacks. We must always be careful not to fall for their schemes. This Valentine’s Day, everyone must be vigilant. Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.” ~Jonathan John B. Paz, BPI Enterprise Information Security Officer and Data Protection Officer

BPI’s ‘FLAMES’ reminder consists of simple cybersecurity tips that account holders can do to keep their accounts safe and secure especially this Valentine’s Day:
  • F-riends? Family? It is better to keep confidential details like your PINs and passwords a secret (even) from them.
  • L-ove to share your latest updates online? This is okay but be sure to set boundaries. Avoid oversharing, especially on social media, for your and your loved ones’ safety.
  • A-nger, excitement, and curiosity are some of the most common emotional trigger's scammers latch on to for their social engineering scams. Too much of these feelings can also be used as bait to manipulate you.
  • M-arriage between online and offline cybersecurity practices is a good habit to develop. It is not enough to be careful with your actions online only but not offline, and vice-versa.
  • E-ngage only with trusted accounts. When planning to use e-commerce, do background checks first and read reviews about the sellers or product. Legitimate Facebook pages have the blue verified badges on them.
  • S-oulmate? One-True Pair. Just like them, take care of your One-Time PINs (OTPs) as well by never sharing them with anyone.

BPI champions sustainability, launches electric vehicle for employees

The electric vehicle will provide free shuttle service to BPI employees commuting to and from MRT Buendia Station and BPI Buendia Center. Soon, it will add another stop at One Ayala Terminal.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has leased a new electric vehicle (EV) unit in a bid to gradually replace its old gas-powered fleet vehicles and curtail its greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption.

BPI has partnered with Global Electric Transportation (GET), a provider of EVs that use fast-charging lithium-ion batteries, to supply its new EV unit that will be used to provide free shuttle services for its employees travelling between BPI Buendia Center and MRT Buendia Station.

“In BPI, we believe that the first step to building a sustainable future is by starting within ourselves, within the organization. We are excited to roll out a more environment-friendly and sustainable shuttle service for our employees. This forms part of our mission to help build a better Philippines—one family, one community at a time.” ~TG Limcaoco, BPI President and CEO

The EV could potentially reduce the Bank’s diesel consumption by 30,000 liters per year, which in turn will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40,000 kilograms of CO2 per year.

“We are glad to see that more companies are pushing for the use of EVs and starting to realize its positive impact not only on the environment but also on their bottom line. We are happy to partner with BPI and support their sustainability initiatives through our sustainable transport solutions.” ~Freddie Tinga, GET President

BPI and GET executives host an inaugural ride of the electric vehicle.

The EV features a wider body and plenty of passenger room for 30 people compared with traditional shuttles that can only accommodate and ferry up to 15 passengers at a time.

In terms of social inclusivity, the EV has a wheelchair ramp that allows persons with disabilities (PWDs) to easily board and alight the vehicle. The ramp also allows easier boarding for people carrying bikes and other wheeled items.

BPI President and CEO TG Limcaoco and GET President Freddie Tinga (center) launched the electric vehicle service for BPI employees. With them are (from left): Severino Sumulong, GET Director of Legal Services; Frankie Endriga, GET Chief Operating Officer; Anthony Dy, GET Managing Director; Jaime Zobel Urquijo, BPI Director and Ayala Corporation Chief Sustainability and Risk Officer; Eugenio Mercado, BPI Head of Enterprise Operations; and Carlo Poblete, BPI Head of Facilities Services and Management.

The EV also harnesses an intelligent fleet management system, with features such as GPS tracking, route optimization, and maintenance alert which can be accessed through the GETPASS App.

The initiative mirrors BPI’s commitment to sustainability and continuous efforts to cultivate and entrench a sustainability mindset within the organization.

In 2023, BPI won 14 ESG-focused awards from foreign and Philippine award-giving bodies, including Finance Asia, Global Finance, The Asset, and Asiamoney. In 2022, the Bank also won 10 sustainability-themed awards.

BPI's Digital Savings Initiatives Transforming Banking for Filipinos

Open a #SaveUp account by downloading the BPI App or through the BPI Flagship store in Lazada. Alternatively, open a #MySaveUp account from the GSAVE menu of the GCASH app and discover a world of possibilities.

BPI's commitment to innovation, convenience, and customer centricity is helping more Filipinos achieve their financial goals through various digital channels. Starting in 2021, BPI’s #SaveUp allows customers to open a savings account via the BPI App without the need to visit a branch.

Building on that success, in 2022, BPI launched BPI #MySaveUp, which enables customers to open a savings account through the popular online wallet, GCash. This year, BPI has taken things to the next level with a brand new channel and partnership with Lazada, one of the biggest e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia. With the new BPI Flagship store, users can easily "add to cart" and open a savings account, #SaveUp, along with other BPI products.

“Through these initiatives, BPI is empowering Filipinos with the ease and convenience of managing their finances anytime, anywhere through the various channels that cater to their unique banking needs. All it takes is 5 minutes and 1 ID.” ~Asi Ruiz, BPI Deposits Product Head

Despite the digital savings landscape nowadays heavily focusing on unprecedented high interest rates to attract depositors, BPI pioneered a different approach; one that is more sustainable yet still rewarding and affordable.

In 2022, the Bank launched a rewards program exclusively available for its digital savings products.  The promotion concluded earlier this year, and two newly acquired BPI digital accountholders, Anne Imperial and Anne Guiritan, not only benefited from a convenient and easy-to-manage digital savings account but also won life-changing grand raffle prizes. Imperial drove home a brand-new Kia Stonic Style Edition, while Guiritan won an Avida Vireo Studio condo unit.

“BPI made saving more exciting for me as I was also looking forward to participating in the program and winning prizes. My #SaveUp account inspires me to enjoy life while working hard and saving harder.” ~Ann Collin Imperial, Kia Winner

This year, in celebration of the bank’s 172nd anniversary, BPI also waived the maintaining balance fee for the BPI #SaveUp and #MySaveUp accounts, making saving more affordable and convenient for its digital clients.

Our vision is to make banking more inclusive, and encourage more and more Filipinos to start the habit of saving. And with all these efforts to provide accessible, relevant, and rewarding banking services to more Filipinos, BPI has already opened more than 1 million digital savings accounts, demonstrating our agility in meeting the ever-evolving needs of customers, and the number continues to grow,’’ said Ruiz.
