Sony Launches FE 100-400MM F5.6-8 OSS, The Perfect Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens for Hobbyists

Delivering Outstanding Mobility and Excellent Image Quality Across the Entire Zoom Range

Sony introduces FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a super-telephoto zoom lens for 35mm full-frame Alpha™ E-mount cameras. This lens is easy to carry and allows you to capture moments you can't reach. Despite its super-telephoto capability of up to 400mm, this new lens is compact and lightweight, weighing only 654 g (approx.). The latest optical design, which includes two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements, ensures excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. The lens also has fast, precise AF (autofocus) performance to help capture moving subjects like birds, sports, trains, and aircraft, and built-in optical image stabilization allows for handheld shooting in the super-telephoto range.

Key Features of FE 100-400MM F5.6-8 OSS in Detail:

  • Compact, Lightweight Design for Easy Handling, Even for First-time Super-Telephoto Users
The lens offers a 100-400 mm super-telephoto zoom range in a compact and lightweight body weighing around 654 g, making it extremely portable. In addition to its excellent portability, its design promotes ease of use during handheld shooting and quick framing. Users can capture powerful images of difficult-to-approach subjects, such as birds and sports scenes, while also enjoying landscape photography unique to super-telephoto lenses by utilizing the 'compression effect', which causes the distance between nearby subjects and distant background elements to appear closer. When combined with an optional teleconverter, you can capture images from twice the distance, with the lens supporting focal lengths of up to 800 mm or 1,200 mm in APS-C mode.

  • Sharp Detail through the Entire Zoom Range means you can Capture the Details That Matter
Excellent image quality is provided regardless of the distance users intend to shoot, thanks to its optical design, which includes two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements that reduce chromatic and other aberrations, resulting in clear rendering across the zoom range. The shooting subject can stand out impressively in a natural, soft bokeh thanks to its 9-blade circular aperture and spherical aberration optimization. Furthermore, with excellent close-up shooting performance — a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 m at the telephoto end / 1.13 m at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.41x — users can enjoy photographing not only distant subjects, but also flowers, insects, and other nearby subjects.

  • Fast, precise AF and built-in optical image stabilization for moving subjects
The linear motor drive provides fast, precise, and quiet autofocus, allowing the lens to capture moving subjects. The lens is compatible with the full-frame mirrorless camera α9 III, allowing for high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 frames per second.

Built-in optical image stabilization effectively reduces camera shake during handheld shooting and allows for stable framing and shooting, even when photographing distant subjects. The lens also supports the camera body's Active Mode image stabilization and coordinated image stabilization control, allowing for high-quality still and movie shooting with minimal blur, even when shooting handheld. It also supports the camera body's breathing compensation function, which corrects for changes in angle of view caused by focus shifts during movie recording.

  • Usability and Reliability Built for Outdoor Adventures with Dust and Moisture Resistance
It features a customizable focus hold button, focus mode/range switch, and zoom lock switch, allowing for quick operation in a variety of shooting scenarios and comfortable ultra-telephoto shooting. In addition, a dust and moisture-resistant design allows users to shoot with confidence even when the weather changes unexpectedly. The supplied lens hood helps to prevent flare and ghosting, both of which can degrade image quality.
