PCPPI increases support for sari-sari stores to empower Filipino micro-entrepreneurs

In order to empower small retailers and improve product accessibility throughout communities, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) is strengthening its support for sari-sari stores through a technology-enabled direct-to-retail strategy.

Sari-sari establishments continue to be vital to the Philippine retail scene as local hubs and sources of income for millions of Filipino households. Because it understands the importance of these micro-entrepreneurs, PCPPI continues to base its long-term business plan on them.

According to Phyo Phyu Noe, President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PCPPI, the company is focused on employing a distribution model that allows owners of sari-sari stores to directly benefit from the company's promotions, pricing policies, and service support.

“Every time our frontliners visit a sari-sari store, we make sure that they are getting the best prices. Technology helps us ensure that the discounts and promotions intended for sari-sari stores reach them directly. We are very clear about our purpose. Our goal is to serve sari-sari stores and support the entrepreneurs behind them—not just today, but for many years to come. Affordability does not mean lowering standards. It means becoming more efficient so we can continue delivering quality products to Filipino consumers.” ~Phyo Phyu Noe, PCPPI President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

For many small shopkeepers, many of whom are female entrepreneurs, sari-sari stores provide a significant source of household income and resilience. By increasing its direct interaction with local establishments, PCPPI hopes to assist neighborhood retailers in operating more efficiently and remaining competitive in an ever-changing retail landscape.

Delivering value in changing times

As Filipino consumers become more value-conscious in the face of economic headwinds, PCPPI is improving operational efficiency to continue supporting sari-sari retailers and the communities they serve.

PCPPI's technology-enabled, locally based distribution model aspires to develop alongside the sari-sari stores that underpin communities around the Philippines.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the Philippines, with products such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum, Saero, and Premier. The FSSC-recommended facilities include plants in Santo Tomas, Muntinlupa, San Fernando, Rosario, Davao, Bacolod, Naga, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Tanauan, and Cebu City.

Every Drop Counts: PCPPI champions responsible water usage

Every Drop Counts: PCPPI champions responsible water usage

The country's only PepsiCo beverage manufacturer, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), is continuing to fulfill its commitment to encourage ethical water stewardship throughout its operations. The organization used 5.4% less water overall in 2023 than it did the year before. This illustrates PCPPI's ongoing efforts to guarantee appropriate water use, especially during the production process.

When conducting water use audits to track consumption throughout its facilities, PCPPI adheres to both international standards and PepsiCo's guidelines. The organization uses up to 50% of its water supply for washing returnable glass bottles. Regular scheduling of equipment maintenance and updates is done to maximize efficiency. To keep technical teams up to date on proper machine use, training courses and policy refresher sessions are also held.

PCPPI's efforts to reduce water use are augmented by reducing the frequency of Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedures in specific facilities. An estimated 30 cubic meters of water are used for each CIP procedure, which ensures cleanliness in the production area. In addition to increasing operating hours, PCPPI uses recycled water to maximize CIP periods.

With the Adopt-A-River Program, PCPPI has been an enduring partner of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local governments in the areas it serves. Organizations are able to maintain and care for bodies of water in their operational areas thanks to this initiative. Currently, PCPPI has active agreements with the local governments of Cebu, Pampanga, Davao, Leyte, Zamboanga, and its home city of Muntinlupa.

The bigger picture

March 22 marks World Water Day, an initiative of the United Nations (UN) that promotes responsible use of and better access to safe water. PCPPI remains committed to furthering its position as a champion of water stewardship, especially since the resource is vital to its operations. Aside from the programs mentioned earlier, the organization empowers its employees to develop smarter, more innovative ways to uphold global standards while ensuring that water usage is managed and reduced over time.

“At PCPPI, we are continuously improving our processes to make sure that our operations utilize resources wisely. Aside from arming our employees with the necessary trainings and industry best practices, we work closely with government stakeholders and community leaders in advocating a sustainable future.” ~Atty. Carina S. Bayon, Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance Officer

Embracing sustainability in the workplace

As per its agreements, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PPCPI) keeps creating initiatives and strategies to help its staff members understand and accept the importance of sustainability in their daily lives. In keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, PCPPI, the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of beloved brands like Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade, holds itself responsible to three main pillars: inclusive business, water stewardship, and circular economy.

“Today’s consumers exercise a keener sense of discernment, particularly when it relates to the values of the companies they support. For PCPPI, sustainability has always been at the heart of our operations. From encouraging process and technological innovation to employee education and engagement, we make a conscious effort to create positive impact on society, the environment, and the communities where we operate. Achieving sustainability is a shared responsibility—there’s no single team or department that carries it forward. It is the promise of creating a better future for generations to come drives us at PCPPI to champion this cause as we practice responsible operations.” ~Atty. Carina S. Bayon, PCPPI’s Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Officer

Caring for the environment remains a top priority for PCPPI, and programs that encourage employees to adopt mindful habits is key. For example, waste segregation is practiced across its facilities as part of its guidelines. There are separate bins for recyclable and non-recyclable waste materials to allow the proper handling and recycling of items that may still be processed for alternative use.

Select PCPPI offices also utilize LED and motion sensor lights, as they consume less energy compared to regular incandescent lights. Through the annual Working Environment Measurement (a sampling method for measuring work environment or conditions) review conducted by its Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) team, management gets to ensure that all of PCPPI offices and production facilities observe optimal working conditions for employee well-being and operational productivity.

PCPPI employees are also encouraged to bring their own reusable utensils at work, like stainless utensils and bamboo tumblers. Water refilling stations are also set up to minimize the use of plastic cups when employees refresh themselves throughout the day. Going digital also allows employees to reduce paper use, as emails, conferencing platforms, and other network-based channels facilitating information exchange and collaboration across PCPPI’s offices nationwide.

Atty. Bayon shared that aside from saving on expenses, implementing sustainability-focused policies in the workplace can contribute to employee health and well-being, as well as a shared sense of purpose.

Much has been said about Gen Z and the characteristics that set them apart from older cohorts. In general, those born between 1997 and 2012 are digital natives who are empowered multi-taskers and always up for an adventure. With less restrictions to mobility, Gen Z are among the first to embrace the return to travel and exploration, especially with friends.

Gen Z Filipinos, like others in their age group, are driven by their quest for identity and authenticity; thus their penchant for exciting, memorable experiences.

After the community lockdowns, they have proven to be keen in testing their boundaries through new pursuits.

In keeping with the times, Pepsi has kept its thumb on the pulse of the youth. The global well-loved beverage brand encourages young, optimistic Filipinos to celebrate living in the now by showcasing shared moments of togetherness in the spirit of discovery.  Pepsi is helping the Filipino youth discover their new personal dining favorites through food adventures and exploration.

“Regardless of the tongue-in-cheek generational stereotypes, Gen Z refuses to be classified into any hard-and-fast boxes. Pepsi remains a prime mover in inspiring the youth to go out of their comfort zones and make new memories through food and drink. For decades, Pepsi has been a refreshing companion to Filipino food favorites—from pizza and pasta to grilled meat and barbecues. We aim to complement the Pinoy palate, especially that of Gen Z foodies, as they define their tastes as they go out and experience the world of taste for themselves.” ~Frederick D. A Healthier 2023 Begins with Simple, Meaningful Lifestyle Choices

With the start of a new year comes fresh opportunities to make better, healthier choices. Developing habits supporting one’s lifestyle goals may prove to be challenging, but Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) encourages Filipinos to take even small, simple steps to build sustainable habits over time.

“Our brands support Filipinos as they take strides towards a healthier, more productive 2023. We believe that by making more mindful choices over time, more people can reap the positive benefits of adopting a more active, balanced lifestyle.” ~Frederick D. Ong, PCPPI President and Chief Executive Officer

Aside from exclusively producing well-loved beverages such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade in the country, PCPPI also bottles and distributes Premier Purified Water. As one of the country’s respected drinking water brands, Premier Purified guarantee consumer satisfaction as products pass high standards after stringent quality and safety testing.

PCPPI suggests five key tips to start 2023 on the right foot:

·     Explore healthier dietary options. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults should maintain a diet high in fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains, but lower in salt, free sugar, and saturated fats. When filling one’s food basket, spend a few more minutes to check the nutrition labels. Developing healthy dietary habits may help strengthen the body in fighting non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

·     Integrate movement in your daily routine. The worst exercise routine is a non-existent one. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an adult needs 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. That’s only 30 minutes every week day, so getting a few steps, skips, and stretches in may work wonders for one’s overall well-being.

Engaging in physical activities can also improve one’s self-esteem and cognitive functions, and can also help reduce tendencies for anxiety and depression.

·      Recovery is key. While physical activity and dietary choices are important in one’s annual health kick-start, getting adequate rest allows the body to recharge and reset. More than getting sufficient hours of sleep, medical studies suggest reducing one’s use of digital devices while in bed to help improve the quality of resting time.

·    Make time for mental health. Practicing self-care and kindness goes a long way. Taking a few minutes to pause and reflecting on the brighter side of daily life can do wonders when managing stress. One’s health also has to do with embracing mindfulness, patience, and compassion towards oneself and others. It may help to keep a daily journal, or write down three positive things that happened at the end of the day as forms of “self check-in.”

·       Drink more water. The CDC says everyone should consume eight to 10 glasses of water. Aside from preventing dehydration, doing so helps regulate cognitive, hormonal, and circulatory functions. Having a bottle of Premier Purified Water handy is recommended for proper nourishment even when on-the-go.

Other than Premier Purified Water, PCPPI is the sole Philippine manufacturer and distributor of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton, Aquafina, and Milkis. For more information about PCPPI and its brands, please visit pepsiphilippines.com.
