SM Prime: Creating infrastructure for plastic-free communities

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), global plastic manufacturing is expected to surpass 1,100 million tons by 2050, with serious environmental, social, economic, and human health implications.

As one of Southeast Asia's top integrated property developers, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) is dedicated to building vibrant, sustainable cities.

With a waste-free future as part of its environmental strategy, SM Prime supports International Plastic-free Day (May 25) and its request to rethink single-use plastics (SUP) for one day.  Furthermore, SM Prime praises the group's efforts to promote the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of 2022.

The Recyclable, Disposable, and Compostable-labeled bins support SM's waste-free future initiative and align with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2022.

A group-wide movement for the EPR Law

The SM group, in collaboration with its Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO), the Philippine Alliance for Recycling and Materials Sustainability (PARMS), is implementing a company-wide strategy to comply with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) EPR Act of 2022.

The EPR law, also known as Republic Act 11898, mandates enterprises to recycle plastic packaging and implement waste management systems.

Recognizing the challenges and realities for businesses and on-the-ground operations through its EPR working group committee, the SM group commits to a five-year plan of action to reduce and recover its plastic footprint, share alternatives and new technologies to respond to growing global crises, and form partnerships with government agencies and other private institutions.

As the SM group's property arm, SM Prime's commitment to a trash-free future includes developing the infrastructure required to support and sustain plastic waste management programs.

SM Prime equips its premises with a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), as well as standardized waste segregation and management techniques, to help reduce the quantity of waste transferred to landfills.  SM GUUN Environmental Company, Inc. (SGECI), a joint venture with a Japanese environmental solutions company, turns non-recyclable waste into cement fuel or "fluff fuel" for eco-conscious cement companies such as APO Cement, Holcim, and Taiheiyo Cement as part of its "co-processing" practices.

SM GUUN converts disposable waste into fluff fuel, which helps unload overfilled and over-capacity landfills.

Beyond compliance

SM Prime continues to operate its established programs, such as the nationwide Trash to Cash recycling market.  Since 2007, it has been one of SM Supermalls' hallmark activities, and it is becoming increasingly relevant as the years pass.

Available in all 87 SM malls, the Trash to Cash program has since been recognized as a rewarding community-driven practice for surrounding residents and mall tenants.

Trash to Cash activates SM malls to assist their communities with sorted plastic waste by incentivizing the exchange of recyclables and providing a place for plastic recovery.  Fifteen SM Plastic Waste Collection sites also function as drop-off locations for clean, empty, and dry plastics.  Furthermore, the Solid Waste Action Program (SWAP) reverse vending machines at SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia allow for the diversion of high-value plastic products such as aluminum cans and polyethylene terephthalate bottles (PET).

The annual International Coastal Clean-up (ICC), sponsored by SM Cares, continues to inspire volunteers to join this global effort for a record-breaking project.  In 2024 alone, SM Cares assisted in mobilizing 23,000 employees, students, and members of diverse communities to participate in nationwide volunteer operations to clean up the world's beaches and rivers.

Volunteers participate in the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) for a shared cause, with sign-ups increasing each year.

Hamilo Coast, known for its Marine Protected Areas and its commitment to living in harmony with nature, together with employees, guests, and residents, recovers plastic waste during beach clean-ups.

Aiming for a waste-free future

Reduction is always the greatest choice.  The SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) has long since removed SUPs from all of its facilities in support of the UNEP's drive to phase them out.  Pico Sands Hotel was also one of the first hotels to partner with the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF) in their Ayoko Na Sa Plastic Campaign in 2018.

SMHCC has successfully replaced all single-use amenities, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) shampoo and shower gel bottles, as well as PET water bottles, in its hotel rooms.  Bamboo or starch-based environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic cutlery have been advocated by the SMX Convention Centers from 2019, as part of its standards to support sustainable event management practices.

“Our work is never done. There are new technologies, innovative solutions, and more avenues for collaboration to look forward to in making the EPR Act work for our communities. But we all have a role to play--it is every individual’s responsibility to create a waste-free future.” ~Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment

Working together as a group to mitigate the effects of the plastic waste crises has a stronger influence on a larger scale.  SM Prime intends to successfully divert a greater proportion of plastic waste away from landfills by implementing improved waste management systems, better waste segregation techniques, and proactive community efforts.

Community at Work: SM Cares Joins Brigada Eskwela 2025

SM employees in action—offering their hands and hearts to help schools gear up for another inspiring year of learning.

From June 9 to 13, 2025, SM Supermalls organized thousands of volunteers across its malls countrywide to support the Department of Education's (DepEd) annual Brigada Eskwela project, which helps prepare public schools for the new academic year.  This year's Brigada Eskwela had the theme “Nagkakaisa para sa Handa at Ligtas na Pagbabalik Eskwela.”

Driven by the spirit of bayanihan, SM employee volunteers join Brigada Eskwela to help public schools prepare for the new academic year—fostering cleaner, safer, and more welcoming spaces where students and communities can thrive.

As a long-time DepEd partner, SM Supermalls once again took part in Brigada Eskwela 2025 as part of its larger commitment to youth development, environmental stewardship, and inclusive community building.

The campaign was implemented at 75 SM Supermalls, with over 1,000 employee-volunteers collaborating with DepEd, local government units (LGUs), school officials, and community members.  It enabled community volunteers to have a tangible influence by assisting schools in creating safe, clean, and inspirational learning environments.

“We are proud to be part of Brigada Eskwela again this year. Education is the cornerstone of nation-building, and through volunteerism and shared responsibility, we aim to help create safe and welcoming learning spaces for students all across the country.” ~Steven Tan, President of SM Supermall

SM employee-volunteers worked on a variety of preparatory operations, including classroom cleaning and disinfection, wall and learning space repainting, desk and chair repairs, and the turnover of vital learning resources.  This annual project improved school infrastructure while also strengthening community ties and encouraging a culture of togetherness, pride, and common responsibility for education.

The program benefited 66 public schools around the country, ensuring that thousands of Filipino students return to a clean, safe, and functional learning environment when school resumes.

By supporting Brigada Eskwela 2025, SM Supermalls demonstrates its continued support and alignment with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reflecting its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable development in every community it serves.

This initiative is also part of SM's broader advocacy through SM Cares, the company's corporate social responsibility arm, which champions programs for people with disabilities, senior citizens, the environment, women and breastfeeding mothers, children and youth, and bike-friendly initiatives.

SM Supermalls elevates urban air quality

SM North EDSA houses the first Sky Garden in an SM mall, highlighting endemic plants and water features that bring nature onto a rooftop.

There's nothing quite like strolling through a mall with stunning views, expansive arcades, and beautiful greenery.  Shopping at SM Supermalls is more than simply a transaction; it's also about experiencing spaces intended for comfort, sustainability, and a healthier environment.  More than ever, SM's dedication to green infrastructure is altering metropolitan air quality and making the city more livable for everyone.

Designing for people and the planet

SM Supermalls stresses people-centric design, resulting in welcoming places that combine nature and modern convenience.  The SM Mall of Asia's arcades and the MOA Sky, for example, have open, breezy walkways that encourage leisurely strolls as well as outdoor restaurants and entertainment.  Meanwhile, SM Aura and SM North EDSA's Sky Garden, the first in an SM mall, incorporates lush flora and water elements to reduce indoor heat, enhance air quality, and provide cooling benefits in densely populated regions.

The SM MOA Sky showcases greenery and open-air spaces that promote cleaner, cooler urban living.

Championing bike-friendly cities

Beyond providing open areas, SM Supermalls is pioneering bike-friendly activities, with over 5,000 bike parking places throughout its sites.  According to studies, riding can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% when short automobile trips are substituted, greatly lowering air pollution and its long-term effects on climate change.

Cyclists gather at SM Seaside City Cebu, championing greener, healthier urban mobility.

Bikers enjoy the convenience of secure parking as SM Supermalls champions eco-friendly transport solutions.

Greening malls with native flora

Furthermore, select SM malls have unique plant species that improve air quality and sustain local biodiversity by filtering pollutants and providing a natural habitat for urban wildlife.  These green spaces are intended not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to actively contribute to a healthier environment.

Making public transport more convenient

To increase access to sustainable transportation, SM Supermalls operates public transportation terminals that provide seamless links to buses, jeepneys, and other means of transportation.  These terminals encourage commuters to take public transport, which can considerably reduce individual carbon footprints and traffic congestion, resulting in cleaner air and more efficient urban mobility.

Powering the shift to EVs

Recognizing the need for greener mobility, SM Supermalls has built Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) in 69 malls countrywide.  By providing key infrastructure for electric vehicles, SM helps to minimize carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels, which is an important step toward improving urban air quality.  According to studies, EVs emit up to 60% less greenhouse gases than regular gas-powered vehicles, making them an important answer for decreasing pollution in densely populated cities.

Monitoring air, empowering communities

SM's commitment to sustainability includes air quality monitoring, which ensures that urban pollution levels are recorded and managed.  Under SM Prime Holdings, the firm collaborated with Quezon City to create an air quality monitoring system that collects environmental data and gives updates via a public website.  This effort keeps people informed while pushing long-term solutions for a cleaner, healthier urban environment.

SM Supermalls monitors air quality in real time, empowering communities with data for cleaner, healthier cities.

A greener future for urban living

From green roofing and bike-friendly amenities to EVCS and air quality monitoring, SM Supermalls is reimagining retail spaces for a greater environmental purpose.  Every visit to an SM mall helps to create a more sustainable and innovative urban future.

40 years of building better communities

SM Supermalls, which has been serving communities for 40 years, remains the leading retail and lifestyle destination in the Philippines today.  True to its past, SM is still at the forefront of environmental sustainability with groundbreaking waste, water, and energy solutions, as well as disaster resilience projects.

CDA Empowers Cooperatives Through SM Supermalls’ Weekend Market

On Monday, July 1, 2025, the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and SM Supermalls signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at the SM Supermalls Headquarters in Pasay City, officially establishing a strategic alliance.  The deal marks the start of a collaborative effort to empower Filipino cooperatives by granting them access to high-traffic mall spaces via the SM Weekend Market, a platform committed to exhibiting local products, indigenous talent, and Filipino entrepreneurship.

L-R: Royston A. Cabunag, Assistant Vice President and Lead for MSME and Job Fairs, Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls formalized partnership through a MOA signing with CDA Chairperson Usec. Alexander B. Raquepo and CDA Administrator Asec. Santiago S. Lim, that aims to empower Filipino cooperatives through the SM Weekend Market initiative.

The MOA was signed by Undersecretary Alexander B. Raquepo, CDA Chairperson, and Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations of SM Supermalls, in the presence of key officials from both institutions.

“This is a historic partnership between the private and public sectors. We take great pride in this collaboration with SM Supermalls, which represents a powerful step forward in uplifting our micro, small and medium cooperative entrepreneurs. This model partnership will not only provide access to markets, but help elevate the economic well-being of our communities.” ~Undersecretary Alexander B. Raquepo, CDA Chairperson

Fresh, proudly Filipino produce takes the spotlight supporting local farmers and cooperatives at the SM Weekend Market at SM City Calamba.

Shoppers enjoy direct access to farm-fresh produce at the SM Weekend Market where farmers are given dedicated selling spaces in select SM Supermalls.

Local farmers showcase and sell their fresh harvest to shoppers at the SM Weekend Market, a platform by SM Supermalls that connects producers directly to consumers in high-traffic mall locations.

According to the agreement, CDA would support qualifying cooperatives around the country to participate in the SM Weekend Market.  at exchange, SM Supermalls would make space accessible at important mall locations for a small fee, intended solely to pay maintenance costs.

“The SM Weekend Market was born out of a simple but powerful idea — to give farmers and local producers, especially those in cooperatives, the chance to bring their goods closer to the people, in places they wouldn’t normally have access to. With CDA as our partner, we are excited to open more doors and more mall spaces to co-ops across the country. This partnership will allow more communities to thrive, more stories to be told, and more Filipino-made products to be celebrated.” ~Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls

Lively displays of locally grown vegetables welcome shoppers at the SM Weekend Market at SM City Southmall.

SM Prime: Creating infrastructure for plastic-free communities

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), global plastic manufacturing is expected to surpass 1,100 million tons by 2050...
