Tagbilaran City, the capital of Bohol Island and a thriving tourism hotspot in the south, is now proud to be the "First City" in the province to revamp its emergency response capabilities using cutting-edge technology.
On April 25, Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap announced the inauguration of her city's 911 Emergency Hotline, which will use a sophisticated US-based emergency communication system.
Mayor Yap stated that the port city, which acts as a significant gateway for both passengers and freight, receives a large number of travelers from other southern regions, including Manila. According to recent figures, Tagbilaran City, under her leadership, has experienced constant tourism growth of almost 30% per year for the past three years and has become a popular tourist destination due to its historical monuments, beaches and natural features.
“We are expecting foreign tourist arrival to swell for our upcoming and famous celebration, the Saulog Festival on April 27 that will be highlighted by colorful street dancing and a ritual showdown competition. It is only fitting for Tagbilaran to welcome all its visitors and its residents into a city that can give them peace of mind because it can assure an efficient emergency response when needed, ensuring their safety is a priority for me. A well-coordinated and effective emergency response builds public confidence in what local authorities can do in the face of emergencies and calls for help. It is our duty to protect our constituents and all who visit our City. Peace and order and protection, these are the cornerstones of public service.” ~Mayor Jane Yap, Tagbilaran City Mayor
The Mayor and City Council wanted to give world-class public safety to both tourists and residents, therefore they decided to upgrade Tagbilaran's emergency response system. It was also a direct reaction to the Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla's request that all local government units collaborate on a uniform emergency response system.
Mayor Yap complimented the DILG and the current administration for their vision and hard work to promote public safety countrywide. She stated that a unified emergency response system will improve coordination and communication, speed decision-making, aid in resource allocation, eliminate duplication of effort, reduce confusion, and give emergency callers what they deserve: easy access and immediate response.
Tagbilaran's emergency response command center can now give quick and exact caller location, fully record all calls, and interact smoothly with other communication devices and systems, ensuring practically simultaneous and rapid arrival on the site of an emergency call. It can interact with CCTV systems, employs data-driven analytics, detects and reduces spoof calls, and is now available through popular social media apps like Facebook and Messenger, making "911" in Tagbilaran accessible, dependable, and simple to use for anyone.
