6 out of 10 Filipino Adults Are at Risk of Osteoporosis Anlene Sounds the Alarm on the Silent Health Crisis

Alarming new data from Anlene's bone scans in 2024 and 2025 suggest a silent health epidemic among Filipinos.  Out of almost 80,000 Filipinos who participated in the effort, a staggering 6 out of 10 (59%) were found to be at danger of osteoporosis or osteopenia, with cases discovered in people as young as 24 years old.

Osteopenia is characterized by lower-than-normal bone density without fractures, and it is an important precursor to osteoporosis—a more severe condition characterized by weak, fragile bones and a high fracture risk, even from mild falls.

“By 2050, around 10.2 million Filipinos could be affected by osteoporosis, with another 30 million at high risk of developing osteopenia.” ~Dr. Len Lugue Lizardo, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (OSPFI).

Lizardo highlighted that a lack of exercise and natural aging are among the primary reasons why individuals might develop these conditions.

A 2023 National Nutrition Survey (NNS) Food Consumption Survey also found that Filipinos of all ages are not eating enough to achieve their Recommended Energy Intake (REI).  Except for newborns and preschoolers, the typical consumption of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C is still low.  Protein shortage is another issue, especially for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Back pain after sitting for too long is an indication of deteriorating bone-joint-muscle (BJM) health.  Unfortunately, most Filipinos wait until it is too late.

Osteoporosis can have a substantial impact on a person's capacity to live a full and productive life, preventing them from pursuing personal objectives and family duties as they age.  Other disorders include sarcopenia and osteoarthritis, in which muscle mass and joint cartilage degrade over time.

Anlene Encourages Filipinos to #KilosLagi

As bone-joint-muscle health among Filipinos deteriorates, Anlene announces its latest advocacy campaign, #KilosLagi, to raise awareness of this silent health problem and urge Filipinos to take action now.

#KilosLagi is a call to action that promotes bone, joint, and muscle health through deliberate activity and proper diet.  No step is too little; anyone may begin by being more attentive in their daily actions, such as taking stairs instead of elevators, parking farther away to walk to an entrance, or going to the market rather than ordering online.

Optimal diet is also important, as it aids in maintaining increased physical activity.  Beyond merely eating "healthy food," it is important to eat mindfully and maintain an appropriate balance of macronutrients such as carbohydrates and protein, as well as micronutrients such as necessary vitamins and minerals.

While meat, fruits, vegetables, and conventional milk are traditional sources of these nutrients, drinking adult milk like Anlene is a simple and effective approach to guarantee that daily nutritional needs, including calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other key nutrients, are satisfied on a continuous basis.

“For years, Anlene has been committed to supporting every Filipino’s bone, joint, and muscle health because we know that when our bodies feel strong, we can move freely, age stronger, and enjoy life doing what we love with our loved ones. We encourage everyone to get a bone scan as soon as possible, prioritize proper nutrition with Anlene — specially formulated with high calcium and protein — and adopt the Kilos Lagi mindset to consistently support their bone, joint, and muscle health. ~Jasmin Magsajo, Sales & Marketing Director of Fonterra Brands Philippines Inc., the local distributor of Anlene

Aiming for One Million Bone Scans by 2030

To address this long-term public health risk, Anlene is stepping up its efforts to promote the #KilosLagi campaign by providing free bone scans around the country, with the objective of achieving one million scans by 2030.

Anlene, in collaboration with OSPFI, is also strengthening partnerships with local government entities and private organizations to drastically reduce the number of Filipinos at risk of osteoporosis.
