SM Cares reiterates support for "mga Natatanging Nilalang" at 2023 Happy Walk for Down Syndrome led by DSAPI

SM Cares reiterates support for "mga Natatanging Nilalang" at 2023 Happy Walk for Down Syndrome led by DSAPI

"Today, we express our love once again to our special friends in our midst. Today, we show that we care about their well-being. Today, we show that we shall always walk in solidarity to ensure that they have a bright future. We walk today because we seek to foster love, understanding, and hope through this yearly activity, because we act to get integration of persons with disabilities in our community. We want to bring positive change to ensure that people with Down Syndrome have opportunities to contribute and have their rights guaranteed. This SM Cares Program on Disability Affairs is something that is etched already in our business. We don't just do programs for short-term. If we may mention, this is our 16th year of partnership with DSAPI. We are not doing this just for fun. We are doing this because we believe this is the right thing to do." ~Engr. Bien Mateo, SM Cares Program Director for Persons with Disabilities

This was one of the key points of SM Cares Program Director for Persons with Disabilities, Engr. Bien Mateo's speech at the 2023 Happy Walk for Down Syndrome of the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI); which took place last February 26 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City.

The recently concluded event marked its 20th year overall and the 16th year that DSAPI held it in partnership with SM Cares. This was also the first time that it was held physically after three years, and was held simultaneously in Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Bacolod.

Among the key individuals who graced the event, aside from Mateo, were DSAPI President Luis Harder, DSAPI Chairman Elmer Lapena, and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Hans Sy. Representatives from various Down Syndrome communities and advocacy groups were also present during the event.

A total of 3768 participants attended the Manila leg this year, while Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Bacolod posted final counts of 580, 140, and 250 participants, respectively. Overall, the nationwide event garnered 4,738 participants.

A total of 354 SM employees and companions for Manila Happy Walk from SM Supermalls, SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc., SM Engineering Design and Development, SM Hotels and Conventions Corp., SM Markets, SM Prime Holdings Inc., SM Development Corp., SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc., and SM Family Entertainment Center Inc. also joined the event.

One of the highlights was the Happy Walk Parade wherein people with Down Syndrome and their loved ones walked together throughout the SM Mall of Asia Complex. An annual tradition, the parade is a way for people with Down Syndrome and their families to promote awareness, acceptance, and appreciation for those with the condition.

Prior to the parade, the National University Pep Squad gave a rousing performance and led a cheer for Down Syndrome awareness. Later during the event, actor and Down Syndrome awareness advocate Andrea Torres performed special song and dance numbers that wowed the crowd. She also shared a short message on the importance of caring for people with the condition, being sister to one herself.

Another notable part of the event was the Dance ShowDOWN, wherein several children with Down Syndrome showcased their groovy dance moves on stage. Various booths with activities for the participants, such as drawing and games, were also present throughout the half-day event. To make it even more exciting, there were also raffle draws, where gift cheques, insurance packages, gadgets, and a 4K smart TV were given away to winners.

The event was capped off with a dance number to Ronnie Lee's song "Natatanging Nilalang" performed by children with Down Syndrome. Composed with a fondness for those who have the condition (he himself has a nephew who has Down Syndrome), Lee's song highlights all the characteristics that make these individuals special, and is one of empowerment not only for them, but also for their loved ones.

Mr. Hans Sy, Chairman of Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, and a long-time supporter of PWD activities and events, celebrated with the kids and families at #HappyWalk2023.

Happy Walk for Down Syndrome is a yearly event that gathers persons with Down Syndrome and their loved ones into a day-long family-oriented event filled with fun activities and entertainment. Held every February as part of the celebration of National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month, it aims to promote awareness and better understanding of those living with the condition.

Happy Walk is just one of the many ways SM Cares is supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly "SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities."

Other PWD-friendly initiatives from SM Cares include the annual Angels Walk in partnership with Autism Society Philippines, held every January in celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week; the annual Sensitivity Training for Customers with Different Needs, which educates mall staff and security personnel on how to care for PWDs; and the annual Emergency Preparedness Forum which educates PWDs and senior citizens on what to do during emergencies.

SM Cares is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, with programs that support communities, promote social inclusion, and care for the environment. Aside from the program on PWDs, its advocacies include Programs for the Environment, Women & Breastfeeding Mothers, Children & Youth, Senior Citizens, and the SM Bike-friendly initiative.

Recognizing New Women leaders in Megaworld Hotels and Resorts

Twin Lakes Hotel, located at Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway, Laurel Bantangas

A woman is the best candidate for the job! Filipinos will always, if not the majority, associate the word "care" with all women, particularly mothers, who have tirelessly given everything they could to mold leaders and contributing individuals beginning within our collective "home." In fact, times have changed, and now, more empowered women are taking on leadership roles in their chosen fields.

Belmont Hotel Boracay, located at the Newcoast Drive, Boracay Newcoast, Brgy. Yapak, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Philippines

Megaworld Hotels and Resorts, the largest hospitality management chain in the Philippines with six brands, twelve properties, and 4,500 room keys nationwide, is celebrating three smart, hardworking women who have overcome numerous obstacles with different mindsets and are now taking on new leadership roles within the company.

Keep going and learn to stand tall
Rowena Samonte, General Manager of Twin Lakes Hotel

Rowena Samonte, General Manager of Twin Lakes Hotel

Make sure to say hello to GM Samonte the next time you visit the Twin Lakes Hotel, one of the most popular hilltop resorts in the south of Luzon near Tagaytay. Owen, as she is affectionately known to many, rose from her position as Director of Sales and Marketing at the property to her current position as the first lady general manager of a 122-room hotel in the center of Megaworld's 1,200-hectare Twin Lakes estate. She discusses that despite the title, as the world continues to change.

“I am positive that change will come naturally. In the future. I would like to be defined and seen as a leader alone, and not a woman leader. Keep going despite the times when the world fails to be kind. We must learn to stand tall and take care of ourselves. there is no point in beating yourself up over things that you cannot change. Ultimately, fall in love with the process, not the goal. Don’t be afraid to be too much and enjoy as you watch everything fall into place.” ~Owen Samonte, Director of Sales and Marketing

As society comes to better terms with inclusivity, she sees it as a privilege and a responsibility to part-take in the effort of eliminating prejudiced biases with gender and preference as a primary basis.

The first-time general manager has surely done much with almost three decades of humble service in the industry under her belt. She has expanded her craft from operations to sales until reaching an executive leadership rank. During her early days, she remembers starting her career as an outlet cashier moving her way up to Assistant Director of Events and Management in Edsa Shangri-La in Manila. She also dabbled with other international brands like Mandarin Oriental, Intercontinental Hotel and other local brands like B Hotel in Quezon City and Robinsons Hotels and Resorts before joining the largest homegrown hotel chain in the Philippines, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts starting the year 2020 until the present.

When asked about the best advice she can give to the younger generation about becoming a better version of themselves.

For the month of March, in honor of Women’s Month, imagine quiet moments with the cold gentle breeze over “Afternoon High Tea”. Enjoy this best in the property’s high ceiling European Style lobby or al fresco, overseeing the hotel’s vineyard and mesmerizing view of Taal lake. Make the month of March  memorable for you and the family, for dining and room bookings visit www.twinlakeshotel.com.ph or email reservations@twinlakeshotel.com.ph

Believe in the good in everyone
Maia Israel, General Manager of Belmont Hotel Boracay

Maia Israel, General Manager of Belmont Hotel Boracay

Sweet and loving. Promoted from resort manager to now the general manager of Belmont Hotel Boracay in just a span of a year, Maia Israel, has always been well loved for her nurturing approach to leadership.

“Mentorship is a tool I personally have benefited from the most and is my privilege and responsibility to pass it forward. You bet, and quite a lot! But if there’s one observed universal fact across cultures that ties us all in, is that you will never go wrong when you believe in the good in everyone. You can never tell how your day is going to end. You take things like how the shores welcome the waves of the sea. You can never control it, but you can always make the most out of it. What more from life can you ask for?” ~Maia Israel, General Manager of Belmont Hotel Boracay

Remembering the days when she started her career in the hospitality industry way back as part of the reservations team in Shangri-la Mactan in the 90’s up to her stint in Maldives, Indonesia, Fiji, and Cambodia with brands like Marriott International and Banyan Tree and everything else in between, she admits having been blessed with leaders who took the ways of the heart to motivate outcome and positives results.

Were there tough days? With most of her experience growing in the revenue, rooms operations and F&B of numerous beach resorts all over the world.

As one of the two MHR properties in Boracay Newcoast, one being Savoy Hotel Boracay, she appreciates how unique one is from the other. She said Belmont takes a straightforward and tranquil approach as opposed to the usual parties the island is generally known for. The hotel is most fitting for small to large family reunions, people vacationing with a hint of business, and senescent guests who prefer peace and quiet while enjoying the sun, sand, and sea of Boracay. With 442 rooms, 2 F&B outlets, a pool, spa, and a dedicated beach front perfect to greet the golden sunrise.

Get treated to a night or two and plan those private dinners by the beach with Belmont Hotel Boracay. Email www.reserve@belmontboracay.com.ph or visit www.belmonthotelboracay.com for room reservations and other arrangements for a comfortable stay.

Artifract beefs up NFT portfolio with new artists, fresh pieces

Artifract.io, the country’s first non-fungible token (NFT) platform, beefed up its portfolio with the latest collection of celebrated artists Juvenal Sansó, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, and National Artist for Sculpture Abdulmari Asia Imao in a public launch held recently at the Unionbank Plaza in Pasig City.

Art collectors, influential entrepreneurs, and estate partners who were in attendance were able to clinch the premium NFT tiles of Sansó’s Euphoric Abundance, Imao’s Sarimanok Series, and Aguilar Alcuaz’s Manila Bay Sunset in a private auction during the event. Aside from illustrious personalities in the art industry, Artifract also received a warm welcome from some of the country’s most influential entrepreneurs.

“It is actually our second time to partner with Artifract. We are so happy that through Artifract and this NFT project, we are able to democratize the artworks of Mr. Sanso and more people get to own part of his work. At the same time, these people help us serve the Filipino public better by ensuring that we continue with the work that we do. We are thankful, and we are so excited.” ~Ricky Francisco, Fundacion Sansó Museum Director and Curator

Artifract democratizes art ownership by fractionalizing them as NFTs, empowering collectors and enthusiasts, and even ordinary individuals, to participate in the market by making art more accessible. Through the platform, artists can showcase their artworks and fractionalize them as NFTs so that individuals can own pieces of their artworks at more affordable prices.

Using the proprietary token factory technology, a system wherein real-world or digital assets are represented by "tokens" on the blockchain, Artifract breaks down artworks into smaller pieces or digital grids, which are then sold to the public.

“On behalf of the family, we are really excited to partner with Artifract for this event. To see my lolo’s work in a very digital space, I think it’s something that he would have been excited about, having dabbled in different mediums. He is a National Artist for Sculpture, but he also did a lot of paintings, ceramic work, and photography. Knowing that there is this entire medium out there, a new way to experience art that showcases Mindanao culture, I’m sure he would have been excited to see it.” ~David Imao, Grandson of National Artist Abdulmari Asia Imao

Last year, Artifract also ventured into the fractionalization of Pinoy Rock Icon Ely Buendia’s music to allow fans and music lovers to immerse themselves in his works. Users, under their avatar personas, were able to explore his music and discover a newfound appreciation for his works in the metaverse.

Artifract is a partnership between Unit 256 Ventures Inc. and UBX, the leading open finance platform in the Philippines. Under this strategic alliance, UBX provides the necessary technologies for optimal user experience and advances the project’s business and marketing development. Unit 256 spearheads the conceptualization to branding, from scouting to the recruitment of artists and art enthusiasts alike.

“All else considered, Artifract owes its success to the local art community. From the start, we have received nothing short of a warm welcome and much enthusiasm from art collectors and artists alike. We are determined to live up to everyone’s expectations and we are looking forward to partnering with more Philippine Masters in the art industry.” ~Rico Dela Cruz, The Product Owner of Artifract

Old artworks are resurrected into new masterpieces, expanding the reach of art by inviting more members into the community and providing a more stable income for artists.

About Greenwich
Greenwich’s story began in 1971 as a small, family-owned store selling a selection of pizzas at the then Greenhills Commercial Center. As the brand’s pizzas grew in popularity, Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) took notice. In 1994, JFC acquired majority shares in Greenwich, infusing what was a family business with industry-leading competitiveness. New pizza variants and a variety of products were introduced through the years, creating a reputation for Greenwich as a maker of mouthwatering pizzas and pastas for the Filipino “barkada.” Today, Greenwich is the country’s biggest pizza and pasta chain with over 270 stores and counting, and home of the best-selling Hawaiian Overload®, All-in Overload®, and Lasagna Supreme®.

Emirates invests US$ 135 million in new pilot training center

Emirates invests US$ 135 million in new pilot training center

Emirates will soon build an advanced training facility to accommodate 6 Full Flight Simulator Bays (FFS) for its future Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X aircraft. The brand new, 63,318 sq. ft. facility is slated to open in March 2024.

"This US$ 135 million investment to build a new pilot training center will ensure Emirates' readiness to commence its pilot training ahead of the delivery of its new aircraft fleet starting from 2024. The building will be equipped with the latest, technologically advanced simulators to provide the best training for pilots, while using solar power to reduce energy consumption." ~His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group

The new building will be adjacent to the existing Emirates Training Facilities in Dubai, which will provide a great integration and close proximity to all the other pilot training centers.

Pilot trainees will also benefit from being able to set-up and configure the cockpit environment using bespoke devices as part of the pilot training module and upload the data to the Full Flight Simulator (FFS) prior to commencing their training session. This innovative, first-of-its-kind concept is designed to shorten the trainee’s preparatory time inside the simulator, help them maintain focus and take full advantage of the training duration.

With the addition of the new building to Emirates’ existing training colleges in Dubai, the airline will have the potential to expand its pilot training capacity by 54% per year. Across the airline’s training buildings, Emirates' pilots will have increased flexibility and facilities to hone their flying skills with 17 full flight simulator bays offering a capacity of more than 130,000 training hours a year.

In line with the scheduled delivery of Emirates’ first Airbus A350 aircraft, the airline’s newest training college will commence training its first batch of A350 pilots by June 2024.

In addition to modern training facilities for its flight deck crew, the airline offers a range of world-class training and development programs for its workforce and for other aviation professionals. In Dubai, these include: the Emirates Flight Training Academy for cadets, Emirates Aviation University, Emirates Cabin Crew Training Centre, and numerous programs specially created for different segments of its employees.
