How to Boost Your Immune System Through Nutrition

When people think about their immune system, they typically contemplate its role in battling a cold or illness.  However, there is a clear link between the immune system and nutrition.

Our immune system is one of the most efficient ways to defend against viral infections.  Everyone's immune system has two types of functions: innate immunity, which prevents diseases from entering the body, and adaptive immunity, which removes or inhibits the growth of pathogens such as viruses and bacteria in the body.

Malnourished people's immune systems shut down. People who are overweight or obese have an overactive immune system, leading to inflammation. This is especially alarming in the Philippines, where the 2021 Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) found that 29.5% of Filipino adults are overweight and 14.8% are obese, indicating an increasing trend connected to sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary choices.

Furthermore, when the country enters the rainy season, Filipinos are more vulnerable to ailments like the common cold, flu, and other respiratory infections, making it even more crucial to prioritize immune health.

How Nutrition Impacts the Body’s Immune System

There is a clear link between the immune system and nutrition.  Chemical reactions can influence our health state by influencing what we eat, where we live, how much sleep we get, how much exercise we do, and even who we live with.

The microbiome is a group of bacteria that help us fight germs, digest food, generate vitamins, and strengthen our immune system.

The majority of the immune system, about 70%, is positioned in the intestines and regulates food intake and metabolism.  This makes it vital that we consume a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients while leading a healthy lifestyle.

4 Tips to Increase Nutrients that Help Strengthen the Immune System

Eating a balanced diet requires ensuring that there is optimal nutrition intake at a cellular level. Make sure you consume enough of the following nutrients:

1. Include protein in your daily nutrition.

Protein, often known as the body's basic building block, permits the body to produce antibodies necessary to protect against invading viruses and bacteria.  To get enough healthy protein foods, consume fish, poultry, lean meats, soy products like tofu and tempeh, and low-fat dairy.

2. Incorporate vitamins and phytonutrients.

Vitamins A and C, as well as phytonutrients, are important immune system components.  Vitamin C, one of the most powerful immune system boosters, stimulates our bodies to manufacture antibodies that fight infections.  Vitamin C must be consumed on a daily basis because the body cannot create or store it.  Vitamin A promotes the health of our skin, digestive tract, and respiratory system.

Phytonutrients in vegetables and fruits minimize oxidative stress, which can weaken the body's ability to fight infections. A variety of phytonutrients have been demonstrated to lessen the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, combat inflammation, lower blood pressure, and improve the overall health of our immune system.

3. Focus on gut health with probiotics and prebiotics.

The digestive system plays an important role in immunological function.  The intestinal tract is the primary point of interaction with the outside world, and it contains the microbiome, which aids digestion and nutritional absorption.  Having the correct gut bacteria has been linked to benefits such as weight loss, improved digestion, healthier skin, and, most crucially, improved immune function, albeit research in these areas is not conclusive or generally applicable.

According to studies, probiotics, or "good bacteria," help to maintain the digestive system, while prebiotics, which are forms of fiber that the human body cannot digest, serve as food for these probiotics.

4. Increase omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) are essential types of fat found in seafood, flax and chia seeds, and supplements like fish oil.  Omega-3 fatty acids may improve immune cell function, which is important in both the innate and adaptive response to infections.

Following general good-health standards, such as a balanced diet and frequent exercise, is your first line of defense and the most effective approach to naturally maintain a robust and healthy immune system.

Herbalife's recently launched ImmuLift in the Philippines is an immunity-boosting dietary supplement drink.  ImmuLift is formulated with a unique blend of ingredients that include EpiCor® (a clinically researched ingredient that strengthens the body's first and second lines of defense), Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Selenium, and Zinc. It is intended for adults to support their daily wellness and help maintain their body's natural defenses.

How the pandemic sparked changes to Gen Zs and Millennials’ breakfast habits

Forming new habits is not always easy. It takes determination, strong willpower, and a right environment to start something new. Research has shown that on average, it takes 66 days, equivalent to over two months, for a new behavior to become automatic.

Over the past year, with more consumers staying at home as a result of the pandemic, new habits were being formed. According to the Asia Pacific Breakfast Habits Survey 2021 conducted by Herbalife Nutrition to understand the impact of the current pandemic on consumers’ breakfast attitudes and habits as well as the behavior preferences of different demographic groups, two in five (37 percent) Gen Zs and Millennials in the region began eating breakfast more often and half of the respondents who started doing so said they ate breakfast six to seven more days per week.

When it comes to positive breakfast habits, they mainly involve two key considerations – the frequency of eating breakfast and the nutrition that goes into it to make a healthy meal.

As revealed by the survey, Gen Zs and Millennials have increased their breakfast frequencies because of their motivation to improve health and well-being (65 percent); ability to prepare breakfast with more time on hand (48 percent); and their desire to use this time at home to make a positive lifestyle change (41 percent). In addition, they have also started eating healthier by incorporating more vegetables and fruits (57 percent); have a nutritionally balanced meal (54 percent); and drank more water (52 percent).

While there have been positive changes to their breakfast habits, making consuming breakfast a daily commitment does require effort and determination to ensure that these good habits stick.

Here are some tips offered by Susan Bowerman, Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition, on the benefits of a healthy breakfast and how to ensure that their positive breakfast habits last.
What Is a Good Breakfast?

The foods you eat for breakfast can affect how you feel and perform throughout your morning. There are several things that a good breakfast can do for you.

A healthy breakfast can:
  • Keep you fueled up until your next meal or snack. A well balanced breakfast should provide you with staying power. Foods with protein help to satisfy hunger, and high fiber foods help to fill you up.
  • Supply your body and brain with energy. In the morning, your body’s gas tank is running close to empty. When you eat the right foods for breakfast, you’re providing your muscles and brain with the fuel they need for optimal performance.
  • Help avoid blood sugar swings and reduce cravings. A balanced meal that contains both protein and healthy carbohydrates can provide sustained energy throughout your system, and help prevent wild swings in your blood sugar that trigger cravings for sweets or other unhealthy foods. (This applies as long as you don’t have any medical issues regarding your body’s ability to regulate your blood sugar.)
  • Help you make better food choices throughout the day. Breakfast skippers often experience food cravings for sweets and fats that can persist throughout the day. When breakfast is eaten, the cravings for sweets drop dramatically. If the breakfast is high in protein, it tends to also reduce cravings for salty, fatty foods. So, the right foods in the morning can help reduce cravings for unhealthy foods later in the day, and steer you towards healthier choices.
  • Provide enough protein to help support muscle health. Eating enough protein in the morning not only helps satisfy hunger, it can also help maintain muscle health. For many people, typical daily meals tend to provide little protein at breakfast, a bit more at lunch, and a much larger amount at dinner. This is a pattern that may not provide the best conditions for building and repairing muscle tissue. Muscle protein synthesis can improve when protein intake is more evenly distributed throughout the day.

Don’t skip breakfast

With the many benefits that a healthy breakfast offers, it’s a meal that shouldn’t be so casually dismissed.

However, whether you are working from home or working from office, it is easy and convenient to skip breakfast just for those extra few minutes of sleep, especially on days when it is challenging to wake up because of a cool rainy morning or pulling an intense late night the previous night.

With this in mind, perhaps making a few simple changes to daily living might do the trick – such as waking up 15 minutes earlier each day to prepare a quick and nutritious breakfast.

Incorporating a nutritious breakfast everyday
When it comes to selecting what to eat for breakfast, a healthy, balanced breakfast should provide you with a decent amount of protein (20-30 grams is a good target). This helps satisfy hunger and supports muscle health, and along with some healthy carbohydrates can provide sustained energy and fiber. Carbohydrates should include, at the very least, some fruits or vegetables. If your calorie budget allows, add some whole grains as well.

On days where you want an all-in-one breakfast that delivers the right nutritional balance for you body, breakfast protein shakes are good options to consider, like the Herbalife Nutrition Formula 1 Shake. It is easy to prepare and provides all the nutrients required to start your day right.

Consuming a healthy breakfast can bring you many benefits in the long run. All you need to have a healthy breakfast every day is a little time and commitment!

How to Avoid Dry Skin: 7 Hydrating Foods to Try This Season

Letting your body become dehydrated is one of the fastest ways to get dry skin. These conditions occur because the skin contains around 30 percent of water, which contributes to its plumpness, elasticity, and resiliency. A well-hydrated skin can help promote healthy-looking skin.

There are many different ways to ensure your skin is well hydrated, such as using the right skincare products for your skin type and consuming foods that support skin health.

If your skin looks dry, flaky, or irritated, it may be time to take a moment to evaluate your hydration and eating habits.

7 Water-Rich Foods to Try This Season
Every day, make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of fluids, which include beverages such as tea, milk, and coffee. Your skin will also thank you if you eat a diet rich in antioxidants such as vitamin A, C, and E.

Wondering where to get started? Here’s a list of water-rich foods you can try this season:

1. Watermelon
Watermelon is a fruit high in water content (more than 90 percent) and contains minerals and phytochemicals such as lycopene, vitamin C, and beta carotene – all of which can support skin health. In fact, compared to tomatoes, strawberries, or guavas, watermelon offers a good amount of antioxidants. You can enjoy watermelon year-round as a snack or blend it with other ingredients for a delicious, refreshing smoothie.

2. Orange
Fruits come in a variety of flavors, like sweet or sour, and they also have different textures. Oranges are always good to have on your grocery list or your fruit bowl at home. Like watermelons, they contain a lot of water (80-89 percent) as well as vitamin C. You can take oranges anywhere and even peel them without a knife.

3.  Vegetables
Our parents often tell us to eat our vegetables, but did you know that veggies also contribute to our skin’s health? Certain vegetables have high water content, such as spinach (90-99 percent) and carrots and broccoli (80-89 percent). Try incorporating these into your everyday meals.

4. Yogurts
Has it ever crossed your mind that in addition to supporting your digestive health, yogurt also contributes to your fluid intake? One portion of yogurt contains around 80-89 percent water.

5. Pickles
Pickles are usually seen as a relish to complement a meal and as flavor enhancers. Did you know that they also contribute to the overall water content of your food? Pickles contain more than 90 percent water. This volume comes from the fermentation process that often includes adding other forms of liquid and seasonings to help maintain or increase its water content.

6. Fruit and vegetable salads
Establish a new habit, such as serving salads as appetizers before your main course. You can try a fruit salad, vegetable salad, or a combination of both. In addition to improving your appetite, salads that contain fresh fruits and vegetables also contribute to your fluid intake. In fact, lettuce, commonly used in salads, contains more than 90 percent of water.

7. Soups
Soup is another appetizer you can add to your meals. A bowl of warm soup before dinner could help ease your digestive system, making it ready to receive the main course.

8. Smoothies or Protein Shakes
Shakes are a great, convenient way to improve your fluid intake. You can customize them depending on your taste, so if your favorite fruit is not on this list, you can blend your own ingredients and even add protein powder. Many fruits are not only high in water content, but they also provide fiber.

If you haven’t done so, try an exotic, tropical fruit at least once. Durian is a local favorite in Southeast Asia and provides vitamins C and B and lots of potassium.

The Entrepreneurs Top Tech Tools

Rhonda Vetere, Chief Information Officer, Herbalife Nutrition

When the world shut down due to the pandemic, everything changed, especially for small businesses. Suddenly, the ability to connect to customers became even more critical, and the safe way to do so is through technology. While companies have long relied on email or text messaging to communicate, many entrepreneurs found they needed to expand their technology toolkit, becoming more creative and resourceful with how they conduct business and compete effectively. As a technology expert who advises more than 3.4 million entrepreneurs around the world on technology solutions that can help them serve their customers and manage their business, I recommend the following tech tips to help you power your business.

Customer service
We are living during a time of tremendous technology transformation. Gone are the days when people waited for what seemed an eternity to send or receive a message. Time has sped up, and with it is the demand from customers for immediate attention. According to recent research, 82% of consumers expect a quick response from brands. Keeping up or ahead of customers requires staying on top of technology trends and ensuring that you have the tools to compete in the digital age.
For website support, many entrepreneurs use a live chat tool that can help customers with basic questions. Many of these tools can be used on social media as well. If paid chat options are price prohibitive, there are also useful and free tools, including Zoho Desk.

Communication and collaboration
Video conferencing and video chat applications grew exponentially during the pandemic. In March, video conferencing apps saw 62 million downloads. Entrepreneurs are using video apps for connecting with customers, partners, and vendors. While these tools are excellent for meetings, they are also useful for maintaining connections with industry organizations and networking groups. Many of the tools allow break-out rooms for a small meeting within a session, creating an intimate and collaborative space.

As you continue to build your reputation as an expert in your industry, video conferencing can also be used to host a webinar for existing and potential customers. Many entrepreneurs are hosting panel discussions, bringing in other partners and collaborators. These sessions can be taped and repurposed as content for your social media channels, website, and email marketing. There are many video conferencing options, including, Joinme, which has a free plan that lets you invite up to 10 video participants

Social media
Social media is not just for sharing videos and memes – it is a top business tool. Your customers are on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, and Instagram. Once you identify which channels you want to use, you need to post engaging content. These can range from news about products, sales, and impactful information. Posting across several channels every week can be daunting. Thankfully, many social media tools help you schedule and publish content that can be calendared and posted automatically. These tools range from Hootsuite (which has a free option) to Zoho Social to Buffer.

Slack
More and more brands, companies, and entrepreneurs use Slack to communicate with their customers. It's a great place to provide relevant updates, tips and advisement, and new product announcements. It also gives your customers a place away from social media to share stories and entrepreneurs a place to connect with their team more visibly easily.

Storage
There is a lot of discussion about the term "the cloud." Think of the cloud as an off-site storage locker, where all your critical information is safe and secure – and easily sharable. Google Drive, Dropbox, or Microsoft Sharepoint safeguard your backups and allow users access from any location. Moving your work to the cloud, not only benefits you to work from anywhere and any device, but it also makes it easy to share content with your customers.

Email Marketing
Your marketing toolkit may contain a variety of options – one of which is email marketing. Sending professionally designed, informative newsletters to your customers is a great way to keep in touch. One of the most popular companies in the business is Mailchimp. Even better, If your company sends fewer than 12,000 email messages per month to fewer than 2,000 subscribers, you can take advantage of Mailchimp's Forever Free plan.

E-commerce
The pandemic has changed how we shop. Overnight, people began to purchase everything from groceries to furniture online and in record numbers. Customers now expect to buy their products online. They expect the experience to be easy and fast. There are many great e-commerce platforms out there, such as Shopify, a one-stop-shop for setting up your e-commerce store, to Amazon's beyond the popular platform. Shopify offers a 14-day free trial, and you can use it to chat with customers online, track orders and send invoices.

One final note. As a technologist, I remind everyone that interaction with your customers is up to you. Nothing supplants human interaction and connection. With limits on our in-person meetings, it is even more essential to find ways to build businesses. Mix up how you connect with others – pick up the phone, or schedule a Zoom, to call a handful of customers every day. Don't forego a personal email that is not meant to sell a customer or colleague – but to check in with them and see how they are doing. Technology is a fantastic tool that helps small businesses act big. The challenge is to make the technology connections feel more three-dimensional vs two-dimensional. Technology can help us be more efficient and productive, and while it can enhance our communication, it will never replace the incredible power of the human relationship. That part is up to you.

Relearn as We Return to New Normal

By Susan Bowerman, Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition
Health experts have been telling us for the past few weeks that coronavirus is here to stay. It won’t go away on its own and we might never get rid of it, not even when vaccines and effective therapies can reduce transmission and prevent complications and death. The world has a new list of safety measures to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities. We are re-learning the critical importance of frequent handwashing, as well as adapting to wearing face coverings in public, not hugging or shaking hands, and practicing social distancing. These and other safety measures have become part of our daily rituals. Yet there is another critical precaution we must re-learn that is a vital component of preparation and re-entry: proper nutrition and regular exercise.

While we cannot control public health pandemics, we can ensure that our bodies are fit and robust. Healthy eating and being physically fit are critically important, yet more than two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Unhealthy diets are the leading cause of poor health in the U.S., according to a 2018 study  published in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association). After years of declines, heart disease death rates are on the rise again. So are rates of obesity-linked cancers among younger people. Along with donning our masks, remembering to socially distance and washing our hands, nutritious eating and regular exercise are integral items on our personal protection checklist.

Here are 5 tips to help you and your families stay strong and healthy as the world reopens.

Stock Up on Healthy Foods
There have been many reports of people selecting more prepared comfort foods in grocery aisles – items that are easy to stock up on or have a longer shelf life. From chicken pot pies to chips and cookies, these products are surging in sales. The result, in addition to more stress-eating behaviors, is what is being called the “COVID-15” weight gain. There is, however, good news - people are acknowledging the importance of fruits and vegetables in their diet, and they are adding more. For example, during the last week of March, sales of shelf-stable fruits and vegetables were up 51%, frozen items by 47%, and fresh produce by 8%, according to a report from the Produce Marketing Association and the IRI data analytics company.

Power Up with Proteins
Proteins are essential to good health. You need it to support the health of your bones, muscles, connective tissue and hair, and your body needs protein to manufacture specialized proteins such as antibodies, enzymes and hormones. tissue, antibodies, enzymes, and more. No matter how careful you are with your food choices, it isn’t always easy to ensure you get all the nutrients your body needs every day. A protein shake made with milk or soy milk and fruit or vegetables can help you meet your daily needs for several nutrients. And many protein shake mixes have vitamins and minerals added, which boosts nutrition even more.

Enjoy Fabulous Flavanols
Flavanols are a group of phytonutrient compounds found in many foods, but particularly in tea, cocoa, apples, berries and grapes. Flavanols are active antioxidants, and have other benefits including supporting heart health and cognitive function.

Today, a growing number of companies, including Herbalife Nutrition, are looking at new ways to incorporate flavanols from cocoa and tea into functional foods and beverages as well as supplements.

Get Moving
With many gyms and parks closed or with access limited, people are finding creative ways to make a workout both effective and fun. From dance to yoga, online exercise classes abound. If this option is not available to you, consider using stairs as your new stair climber, grab a jump rope or a fantastic aerobic activity, or coordinate a family dance session as your new calorie-buster. Regardless of how much space you have at home, you can do a quick full-body exercise routine to stretch and strengthen your body.

Learn to De-Stress
Our life is full of stress. Between juggling family and work, we often become overloaded. Add a global pandemic and financial uncertainty to the mix, and we have the perfect stress cocktail. Taking care of your health means taking care of your body and soul. Give yourself compassion during this time and do things each day to take care of yourself – from deep breathing to an online yoga class to taking walks and talking with family and friends. The pandemic is taking a toll on all of us but acknowledging the stress you are feeling and finding ways to manage your anxiety will help you – and your family.

Herbalife Nutrition Survey Reveals Filipinos Need to Close Nutrition Knowledge Gap

Sridhar Rajagopalan, Senior Director, Sub-Region Head, and General Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines

The quiz was administered as part of Herbalife Nutrition’s Asia Pacific Nutrition Myths Survey 2020, which was conducted in March with 5,500 respondents from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. To test the nutrition knowledge of the survey participants, the quiz included a total of 48 “True or False” questions spanning nine nutrition areas - general nutrition, protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, caffeine, weight management, and breakfast.

Dr. Chin Kun-Wang, Member, Nutrition Advisory Board, Herbalife Nutrition
Did you know that only 19% of Filipino consumers got 50% of the answers correct in a general nutrition knowledge quiz conducted by premier global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition? The Philippines’ score was lower than the Asia Pacific (APAC) average of 23%.

Only 7% among those surveyed said that they were extremely confident about their nutrition knowledge. Fifty-four percent claimed that they were only somewhat well-informed.

Filipino consumers, however, expressed that they believe in the importance of balanced nutrition. It is among the top three nutrition advice that they were most interested in along with how to improve ailment/condition through nutrition and managing weight through nutrition.

What Filipinos Got Right and Wrong About Nutrition Knowledge
Majority of the Filipino respondents (85%) falsely believe that one needs sufficient calcium intake at any age to optimize peak bone mass for bone health.
