Industry heavyweights share their expertise at 3-day MSME Fiesta Sulong Negosyante

ICSB & UnionBank-powered event focused on empowering entrepreneurs through knowledge-sharing.

The International Council for Small Business Philippines (ICSB PH) and Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) recently held a three-day conference and expo for micro, small, and medium enterprises or MSMEs to empower the entrepreneurs and enable them to thrive in the digital economy. The event was held at the Resorts World Manila in celebration of the United Nations' (UN) International MSME Day, observed annually every 27th of June.

Prior to the fiesta, several experts from the public and private sectors as well as the academe gathered at The Sheraton Hotel for a panel discussion that tackled the most pressing issues concerning the MSME industry.

On day one, keynote speaker Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian stressed how important it was to hold activities such as the Sulong Negosyante giving attention and recognition to MSMEs. Being an entrepreneur himself, he shared valuable learning.

“We need to keep on innovating. We need to keep on finding new products and new services. We need to adapt.” ~Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, Keynote Speaker

Asian Institute of Management President and Dean Dr. Jikyeong Kang; Mansmith and Fielders Inc. Chief Marketing Strategist Josiah Go; and Wong + Bernstein Advisory Group Managing Director Prof. Enrique Soriano led the discussions on the importance of lifelong education and training for MSMEs.
Other presenters focused on digital and media, supply chain and delivery, research, as well as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and good governance.

UnionBank's SME and Micropreneurs Segment Head Jaypee Soliman touched on understanding the needs and challenges MSMEs face to be able to help them succeed. He pointed out the necessity for entrepreneurs to prioritize.

“We need to identify the things that we have to continue doing and the things that we need to start doing. We have to stop thinking we are the solution, but start engaging MSMEs and collaborate on how we can be a solution for them. At UnionBank, we know how critical knowledge-sharing is to ensure that our MSMEs are able to thrive in the digital economy. This is one of the reasons we organized this event together with ICSB. We want our attendees to learn from the best, so they can be at their best in their businesses.” ~Jaypee Soliman, UnionBank's SME and Micropreneurs Segment Head

Philstar Media Group Executive Vice President Lucien DyTioco’s talk was on why Filipinos should support local businesses. Mekeni Food Corporation, one of the country’s biggest food manufacturing companies, is further solidifying its commitment to promoting local heritage not just in the country but in the US.

The home-grown food brand recently partnered with Hiraya Foundation, a New York-based non-profit organization established by Filipino and Filipino-American professionals, for the first-ever Gawad Alab ng Lahi.

Gawad Alab ng Lahi is a program by Hiraya Foundation that aims to recognize individuals, enterprises, and communities that contribute to uplifting the lives of Filipinos and promoting progress in the Philippines.

Garcia, and Skills Simplified CEO Francis Miranda at the Gawad Alab ng Lahi event held at Whitby Hotel, New York (Photo credit: Troi Santos, CNN Philippines).

Hiraya Foundation Chairman of the Board Romulo Aromin, Jr., MD added that the program honors those who made a meaningful impact on the lives of Filipinos abroad and in the Philippines.

“We are fortunate to cross paths with Hiraya Foundation and a group of successful Filipinos who also advocate conservation of our heritage, especially during this time where everything seems to be at our fingertips. As a local brand penetrating the global arena, we recognize the importance of preserving one’s identity, being proud of your roots, and effecting positive change in society. We hope that our story will inspire them that if they are resolute in their dreams, nothing is impossible. No challenge is too big to bring them down.” ~Prudencio S. Garcia, Mekeni President

Garcia, who is also a former overseas worker, continued that like Hiraya Foundation, uplifting lives is at the core of Mekeni.

Mekeni was born out of a simple dream of a father who wants to give his family a better life ahead. This, however, changed and grew deeper after its founder, Felix Garcia, witnessed the hardships in their barrio after the devastating Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991. Since then, it has become their advocacy to uplift lives within and beyond their community.

“We are grateful to Mekeni for supporting and joining us in our cause. With a program such as this, we hope we could inspire the next generation to uphold our heritage no matter where success takes them.” ~Romulo Aromin, Jr., MD, iraya Foundation Chairman of the Board

This partnership between Mekeni and Hiraya Foundation was made possible by the Philippine Consulate in New York, headed by Consul General Elmer Cato who lauds the foundation for its patriotic advocacy.

In the recently concluded awarding ceremony last July 11, 2022, at Whitby Hotel in New York, the following were the winners of the Gawad Alab ng Lahi award: Dr. Leo Felix Jurado for his unrelenting advocacy for Filipino nurses in the US; Concentrix Philippines for opening doors nationwide for Filipinos to provide for their families and thrive in unprecedented times; Philippine Nurses Association of America, Inc. for being at the forefront of advancing the interests and welfare of nurses in the US by providing professional and legal assistance; and Carnival Cruise Line for recognizing and rewarding Filipino talents through employment and ensuring their health and safety during the height of the pandemic.

Apart from participating in Gawad Alab ng Lahi, Mekeni representatives also met with Filipino overseas workers in New York in a tribute event organized by ConGen Cato and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

Mekeni was given a chance to impart to the attendees their experiences and learnings in overcoming challenges.

Happy Life Organics supports gov’t campaign vs dengue

The Philippines is currently dealing with two major health problems – the growing number of Covid-19 cases as well as a steady increase in dengue cases.

Dengue fever is endemic to Southeast Asia and the risk of transmission is highest during and immediately following the rainy season. The dengue virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are found indoors and the Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that prefer to stay in shrubs and trees.

The virus enters the mosquito’s salivary gland where it incubates for eight to 10 days. Then, the mosquito can pass the virus on to the person it bites.

Happy Life Organics, a Philippine based company that promotes innovative and eco-friendly solutions for your home, pets, and unwanted pests, is one with the government in the fight against dengue

“It is that time of the year again when we see an increase in the number of dengue cases. We can protect ourselves from this and we can start doing this at home. Make it a habit to go around your home at a certain time every day to make sure that there is no stagnant water and that your household garbage is disposed of properly.” ~Joe Sevilla, Owner, Happy Life Organics

Here are some tips that Sevilla shared in order to fight dengue:
  1. Keep your house clean and tidy. There are many environmentally friendly products in the market that can help keep your house clean and tidy not only to fight dengue but Covid-19 as well.
  2. Make sure that there is no stagnant water In and around the house. If you have water containers, keep them covered. Otherwise, make sure that things like pet water containers or planter dishes are cleaned on a regular basis.
  3. Wear protective clothing like long sleeved shirts and pants especially in areas where there is a dengue outbreak.
  4. Apply mosquito repellent if you know you will be spending most of the day outdoors. Consult with your doctor first before applying any repellent on your children.
  5. Dispose of waste properly. Take out your rubbish on a regular basis as this will prevent inspects from entering your household.

Happy Life Organics provides all natural, sustainable, eco-friendly solutions to homes all across the Philippines. The company promotes a healthier and happier lifestyle based on a plant-based organic view, bringing customers home and pet product alternatives that are changing and improving lives for the better. GCash, BPI seek to reach unbanked with BPI #MySaveUp

Did you know that 53 million Filipinos have no bank accounts? That is a staggering 69% percent of the country’s population from BSP’s Q3 2021 study.

The problem? Access. Many of them lack the documents required to open bank accounts. They opt to just keep their cash at home for easy access in case of emergency.

To encourage more Filipinos to go into formal banking, GCash, the country's leading e-wallet, recently partnered with the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) to reach unbanked Filipinos, particularly working millennials.

This is part of the top mobile wallet’s continuing innovation to empower Filipinos and find  solutions to digitalize their financial transactions, including paying for their purchases and bills, sending money to their loved ones, and building up their savings so they can have greater financial security and freedom in life.

The partnership between GCash and BPI offers BPI #MySaveUp, an in-app feature in the GSave marketplace.

"The goal of GSave Marketplace is to provide savings account options that would best fit their needs. The collaboration with BPI allows GCash users to enjoy the bank's wide reach and services nationwide. BPI #MySaveUp gives the underbanked and unbanked Filipinos access to formal banking through the GCash app.” ~Winsley Bangit, chief customer officer at GCash

Helping further scale up financial inclusion, BPI #MySaveUp paves the way for unbanked Filipinos to easily apply for and own a formal and all-digital account sans the long application process, allowing them to start their saving journey and achieve their financial goals while earning higher interest rates.

Through this partnership, doing financial transactions and managing an account become plain sailing thru their GCash account or BPI mobile app. This new feature also offers free fund transfer from a user’s BPI #MySaveUp account to his GCash wallet and vice versa.

Users also have an option to get a BPI Debit Mastercard in any BPI branch for only P150 so they can access their account and withdraw from thousands of BancNet and Mastercard ATMs worldwide.

"We, at BPI, are committed to realizing our vision of building a better Philippines. We are committed to continuously pursue financial inclusion programs in support of the BSP's goal for 70% of adult Filipinos to have formal financial accounts by 2023. This partnership with GCash brings us closer to this target as we provide more Filipinos a path towards financial wellness." ~Maria Cristina L. Go, Executive Vice President and Head of Consumer Banking at BPI

BPI #MySaveUp users can also win monthly prizes. Every Php 10,000 saved by the end of the month or have at least Php 3,000 worth of valid transactions within the month earns them 1 #Coin which they can use to buy a game card to win electronic GCs or eGCs from BPI.

Applicants can open their BPI #MySaveUp account on their GCash app. They simply need to click the GSave icon then choose BPI #MySaveUp. Once in, they can open a savings account and proceed with using their GCash profile. After receiving the email confirmation from BPI, they can then finally start accessing BPI #MySaveUp

For non-GCash users, they just need to download the app, upload one valid ID and wait to be verified. Once done, they can enjoy all the products and services of GCash.

Incorporating fiber in your diet has never been easier and tastier with Quaker Oats

It’s been said that what you eat not only reflects how you look but also how you feel. One way of boosting the health benefits of your diet is found in the magic of fiber which is commonly found in fruits, veggies, cereal grains, oats, and beans.

However, a study has shown Filipinos actually consume less than 50% of the daily fiber requirement which means your current diet might not be enough!

According to the Philippine Society of Nutritionist-Dietitians, Inc. (PSND), a study conducted on working Filipino adults shows only almost 8 grams of fiber was reported to be consumed per day on average.

“This is very far from the recommended nutrient intake (RNI) of 20 to 25 grams,” ~Jake Brandon Andal, PSND Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian

This low intake of fiber means Filipinos are missing out on an important nutrient that helps in aiding digestion, preventing constipation, and maintaining good digestive health. It also helps manage weight and reduces the risk of acquiring heart disease.

Through the years, Quaker Oats, the number 1 oats brand, has introduced many fiber-rich products to help Filipinos have a more balanced diet.

Oats have been proven to have 7x more fiber per 100g serving versus long grain white rice which helps fulfill the recommended consumption of fiber our body needs every day.

Now, Quaker Oats is again introducing new and innovative recipes to encourage Filipinos to make fiber a daily staple in their diet using oats from breakfast dishes, lunch, and even treats and desserts!

  • The battle for the best healthy treats
Quaker Oats recently hosted the Quaker Kitchen Cook-Off which featured brand ambassadors Luis Manzano and Solenn  Heussaff who challenged each other to prepare easy-to-do, tasty, and nutritious recipes using Quaker Oats.

During the event, which was also broadcasted via Quaker Philippines’ Facebook page, both health buffs shared their go-to fruity and delicious desserts such as the Rainbow Superfloat, Caramelized Bananas No-Bake Cheesecake, and Homemade Sorbetes.

Luis and Solenn whipped up these fun recipes using Quaker Oats, and along with expert nutritionists, also shared their tips for increasing fiber in your diet and sustaining a healthy lifestyle without completely cutting out treats.

“I love Quaker Oats and it has been a kitchen staple in the Manzano household since I was young. My favorite recipe to make is definitely Overnight Oats because it’s quick and easy but I’ve recently been leveling up my culinary skills! So now, the Rainbow Superfloat recipe is a new favorite. It’s a great option if you feel like having a more fruity and colorful breakfast or dessert that is also healthy, light, and refreshing!” ~Luis Manzano
“It’s very interesting how many healthy dishes you can make with oats as the main ingredient! Though there are other sources of fiber, Quaker Oats is my go-to because it carries 7x more fiber* and it is highly versatile. You can use it in every meal both for savory and sweet dishes like homemade sorbetes, no-bake cheesecakes, and more!” ~Solenn  Heussaff

With these fiber-rich recipes, treats can definitely still be sweet and delicious while healthy and good for your body. Indulge yourself in tastier flavors without sacrificing your diet and disturbing your digestion with Quaker Oats.
