Quezon City, Novo Nordisk, and Danish Embassy Unite to Tackle Obesity at Landmark Obesity Summit 2025

With childhood obesity emerging as one of the most serious public health threats in the Philippines, the Quezon City Government and Novo Nordisk, in collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy in Manila, have officially launched the Obesity Summit 2025—a historic multi-sectoral gathering that mobilizes national and global leaders to treat obesity as a disease and take bold, actionable steps to reverse its alarming rise.

The summit, held today at the MICE Building in Quezon City Hall, brings together top policymakers, global health experts, educators, private sector leaders, and international partners to debunk myths, highlight medical realities, and develop community-driven strategies to protect the next generation's health.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte underscored the city’s commitment to health and wellness in her message.

The Healthy QC Ordinance, a ground-breaking ordinance that establishes a single framework for health promotion in Quezon City, will be launched at the summit.

Recent data from the Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) and the Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) highlight the urgency: Filipino school-aged children, particularly boys, have significantly higher rates of overweight and obesity, with cases among Quezon City children aged 0-59 months increasing by 32.36%.

Fact vs. Myth: What Every Filipino Parent Needs to Know About Obesity

According to a recent study by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), four out of every ten Filipino individuals is obese.  This trend points to major shifts in health practices. Similarly, children and adolescents face issues as lifestyle changes, increased consumption of processed foods, and decreased physical exercise raise potential health concerns. Obesity is sometimes overshadowed by other health concerns, despite the fact that it is a primary cause of a wide range of serious chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

In many Filipino households, a chubby child is regarded as indication of good parenting. “Ang cute-cute naman ng anak mo!” is a popular complement mothers and fathers receive when their child is on the heavy side.  For years, being "on the round side" meant being healthy, well-fed, and adorable.

However, while the aim is frequently innocent, this long-held cultural idea can be deceptive—and even deadly.  Experts now warn that early childhood obesity can lead to major health problems later in life, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and emotional issues including low self-esteem.

It is time to shift the conversation.  Obesity is more than just a physical size; it is a chronic condition.  And for Filipino parents, knowing the truth about weight is the first step in raising healthier and happier children.

As one of the frontrunners in addressing obesity as a disease, Novo Nordisk Philippines is leading the charge through its Truth About Weight campaign—empowering Filipinos with facts, empathy, and science-backed solutions.

Myth: “Obesity is just about overeating and laziness.”
Fact: Obesity is a chronic disease influenced by multiple factors—genetics, hormones, environment, even stress. Children may develop obesity even with regular meals and playtime if other underlying factors are present.

“We should strive to shift our perspective on obesity, recognizing it as a complex health issue rather than solely a lifestyle choice. It's a disease that deserves the same understanding and treatment as any other disease.” ~Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, Senior Medical Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines

Myth: “Kids will outgrow their baby fat.”
Fact: While some children naturally slim down as they grow, others may continue gaining weight due to metabolic or genetic predispositions. Early intervention is key.

Tip for Parents: Watch for signs of weight-related health issues like sleep apnea, low self-esteem, or fatigue. Consult a pediatrician if you're concerned.

Myth: “Shaming or scolding a child will ‘motivate’ them to lose weight.”
Fact: Negative body image and shame can lead to emotional eating, anxiety, and long-term mental health issues. Supportive, loving guidance is far more effective than criticism.

Parenting Tip: Focus on healthy habits, not numbers on the scale. Make it a family goal to eat better and move more—together.

Myth: “There’s no medical treatment for obesity—it’s all diet and exercise.”
Fact: While healthy lifestyle habits are important, medical support may also be necessary. Treatments can include personalized nutrition plans, behavioral therapy, and in some cases, medication.

“Science has given us new tools to manage obesity more effectively. With proper medical support, many patients see real, lasting results.” ~Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, Senior Medical Manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines

The earlier parents understand obesity as a disease, the sooner they may take compassionate and effective action—free of shame and blame. This means better outcomes for entire families, not just children who struggle with their weight.
