CSMC tackles challenges and opportunities of the DOH with latest webicon

Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) recently held its 13th webicon entitled “Challenges and Opportunities of the Department of Health – CSMC Healthcare Summit” last Sept. 9, Friday. The event was livestreamed via Zoom and on Facebook.

For this webicon, CSMC brought together top professionals in the field of medicine and healthcare to discuss different topics and issues that need to be addressed by the Department of Health (DOH) and its incoming secretary. The webicon was moderated by the President of the Philippine College of Physicians, Prof. Diana A. Payawal.

The panel of speakers consisted of former DOH Secretaries Dr. Esperanza I. Cabral and Dr. Manuel M. Dayrit, former DOH Undersecretary Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, and the current President of the Philippine Medical Association Dr. Minerva P. Calimag.

Opening the webicon was Cabral, who provided a discussion on the Universal Healthcare Law.

“The COVID-19 pandemic magnified existing gaps in the healthcare sector,” she said. “The bright side of this is that the acknowledgement of these gaps has provided some impetus for the government to fast track the implementation of universal healthcare initiatives and opened opportunities for additional funding of health programs and services. The government has guaranteed that every person will be enrolled in PhilHealth. Having said that, there must be a commitment to paying the premium of the PhilHealth members who cannot afford to pay it.That is one way of increasing the equity base of PhilHealth.” ~Dr. Esperanza I. Cabral, Former DOH Secretaries
Dayrit shared his insights on healthcare financing and how to facilitate the effective alignment of policies, programs, and funds.

“We must be able to use our budgets wisely and support those chronically underfunded areas and sustain them over time. Hopefully by doing that, and by financing health as the country develops socioeconomically, we move closer to what we call a health financing transition.” ~Dr. Manuel M. Dayrit, former DOH Undersecretary
Herbosa stressed the importance of pandemic preparedness and gave his recommendations on the improvement of health infrastructures.

“What happened during the COVID-19 pandemic showed us that many things can be done through digital technology,” he stated. “Digital technology can be used to fast track the implementation of services to remote areas via telemedicine and digital health services. This can help make Universal Healthcare a reality.” ~Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, Former DOH Undersecretary
Finally, Calimag talked about health human resources, and what improvements can be made to the distribution of doctors and nurses in the Philippines, especially to the more remote parts of the country.

“Most healthcare professionals are centered in cities. And yet, we have many geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Healthcare reform will demand a shift towards a new breed of generalists to meet healthcare needs and absorb the impact of increased access to care under Universal Healthcare.” ~Dr. Minerva P. Calimag, President of the Philippine Medical Association

To end the webicon, a Q&A session was held, with all the speakers taking part in answering participant questions.

Through the session, CSMC President and CEO, Mr. Raul C. Pagdanganan asked the speakers for their suggestions on how the national leadership can increase the equity base of PhilHealth, which is also experiencing the after effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CSMC is committed to using the webicon format to help shape the conversation around the healthcare landscape in the Philippines. By bringing in experts and leaders in their respective fields, CSMC webicons tackle difficult topics and discuss new developments in medicine and public health. Previous webicons discussed the shift of COVID-19 from pandemic to endemic, self-care strategies for workers during COVID-19, detection and treatment of cancer, and more.

BPI enables easy way to send donations digitally

For Filipinos, the rainy season has become synonymous to calamities such as typhoons, severe flooding, and landslides. One super typhoon alone – like Odette in December 2021 – can lead to the deaths of dozens of people, the displacement of thousands, and the widespread destruction of buildings and vital infrastructure across cities and provinces in the Philippines. Located along the ring of fire, the country is also vulnerable to havoc-wreaking volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Therefore, in the event of a disaster, people need to come together quickly and help those in need. To address this issue, the Bank of the Philippines Islands (BPI) this September made it possible for anyone to provide instant assistance to those who need it most, when they need it most. A new feature in his BPI Online and his BPI Mobile app called eDonate now allows users to digitally donate to charities and foundations that can help thousands of marginalized Filipinos.

“The goal of the donation facility is to make helping and caring for more people more convenient and accessible. We are helping empower our clients to support charities and advocacies they believe in by providing them a centralized online portal to send financial support safely, easily, and free of charge. With this new digital service, we hope to further spark the bayanihan spirit of our kababayans and inspire them to be socially conscious and to give back to communities, particularly those devasted by typhoons, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and other catastrophes. We are also launching this in time for the ‘ber months’ – the widely known start of the holiday season in the country, which is indeed a time for caring and sharing. The donation facility provides our clients an easy and error-free option to send help without the need to enroll the beneficiary or key in an account number.~Noel Santiago, BPI Chief Digital Officer

Customers can now send donations to 10 charities through BPI's eDonate service. These include Asia World Center for Mission, Ayala Foundation, Caritas Manila, CBN Asia, Friends of Hope, Jesuit Communication Foundation, Operation Blessings Foundation, Save the Children, TV Maria Foundation and WWF Philippines.

More charities and foundations are in the pipeline, according to Santiago.

Send donations conveniently

All clients with BPI Online credentials can use the new digital service simply by going to the BPI Mobile app, swiping up, tapping “BPI eDonate,” and following the steps indicated in sending a donation. Likewise, the service can be accessed directly by visiting https://bpiedonate.com/.

Once a transaction is completed, eDonate gives donors the option to request an official receipt of donation. The user can simply send a request to the charity or foundation using the email address provided in the email confirmation.

SM Supermalls begins 100 Days of Happiness

SM Supermalls President Steven Tan giving his welcome remarks during the launch of 100 Days of Happiness

To kickstart the Christmas countdown, SM Supermalls began its 100 Days of Happiness last September 16, where they aim to create a circle of happiness with 76 participating malls, shoppers, the marginalized communities of women, persons deprived of liberty, artisans, cause-oriented organizations, and select local government units.

"We want to create a circle of happiness in all our SM malls by featuring products of cause-oriented programs which we will offer to our shoppers who, in turn, give them to friends and family, and ultimately, benefit the communities that created these products. All these and more will start to unfold in the coming days as we continue spreading happiness across all SM malls around the country. Let us not waste our next 100 days and use it to make one another happy by giving. Today, let the countdown begin to a hundred days of happiness!~Steven T. Tan, SM Supermalls President

Through the campaign, SM Supermalls encourages Filipinos to support the advocacies of individuals and organizations that provide opportunities and create livelihood for their communities. For this year, SM partnered with bag designer Zarah Juan, Spark PH, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), the Association of Foot and Mouth Artists of the Philippines, UNICEF, and the Quezon City LGU for its Vote to Tote initiative, among others.

The launch event held at SM North EDSA The Block was attended by SM Supermalls President Steven Tan and SVP for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin; Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, and select councilors of the city; Spark PH Founder Mica Teves; GSP President Dr. Nina Lim-Yuson; Designer Zarah Juan; and Brownies Unlimited Marketing head Dustin Ngo.

  • Equipping young girls to lead and build the future, one box of brownies at a time

For this year’s 100 Days campaign, SM Megamall, along with 9 other SM malls, is collaborating with Brownies Unlimited and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. For every purchase of a special GSP-themed box of brownies in-mall and via the SM Malls Online App, one girl will be sponsored with a GSP membership for a year.

Members of the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. come together to spread the holiday cheer.

"We have a lot of young girls across the country and they've had such difficult times during the pandemic. Our membership dropped significantly. By buying a box, you can sponsor a girl for one year and she can learn so many things like being independent, loving her country more, and helping her community." ~Nina Lim-Yuson, GSP President

Girl Scouts of the Philippines come together to spread the holiday cheer.

Recently, SM Supermalls helped the GSP vaccinate all its 70,000 members nationwide. By providing them with convenient and safe COVID-19 vaccines, SM Supermalls was able to ensure that the GSP members have access to quality healthcare services.

SM shoppers can purchase a box of brownies from 46 Brownies Unlimited branches nationwide and the SM Malls Online App.

In its commitment to building communities, especially for women and the youth, SM Supermalls and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines sign a memorandum of agreement to formalize a meaningful partnership beyond the year 2022.

In partnership with SM Supermalls and Brownies Unlimited, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines launch GSP-themed brownies from September 16 to December 15, 2022. For every purchase of a box of brownies, in-mall and via the SM Malls Online app, one scout will be sponsored with a year’s free membership.

Giving marginalized women and persons deprived of liberty hope for the future

Apart from the GSP partnership, SM Supermalls also partnered with the local government of Quezon City for its Vote to Tote program, Spark PH, and bag designer Zarah Juan to sell upcycled tarpaulin handmade tote bags sewn by marginalized women and female persons deprived of liberty.

"Christmas is all about giving. We are very happy that this year, the communities of Quezon City are included as beneficiaries in this program. And apart from helping the women in our communities, we are also able to help the environment by upcycling 70 tons of election tarpaulins that we've collected." ~Joy Belmonte, Quezon City Mayor

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Vice Mayor Gian Sotto advocate for the “Vote to Tote” project during the Happiness Walk

Juan, the designer, was the brainchild of the upcycling initiative.

"During the elections, there were tons of election campaign wastes. I wanted to do something and I thought I have my platform– my designs. If my designs can actually solve this problem, then it's worthwhile. Then I pitched the idea to Maica Teves, the founder of Spark PH. From there, we gathered all the help we can– from the Quezon City LGU who will help us collect tarpaulins, the women communities that can help us create, and SM Supermalls who can provide us the platform to distribute." ~Zarah Juan, Designer

Designer Zarah Juan, along with the local government of QC, Spark PH, and SM Supermalls partner on the Vote to Tote program - an initiative fueled for, and by, marginalized women and female persons deprived of liberty.

Joining the Happiness Walk were men and women of substance including select Girl Scouts members, Jeremy Lapena and Bernce Sevilla of the Downs Syndrome Association of the Phils, Mylene Abiva of WomenBiz, media celebrities Ces Oreña Drilon, and Gina Pareño among others.

The proceeds of the upcycled tote bags will be given to the women PDLs in Camp Karingal, and the marginalized women of Barangays Sto. Cristo, Greater Lagro, and Pinyahan in Quezon City. The tote bags will be sold in the following SM malls:
  • SM Aura Premier
  • SM Southmall
  • SM City Fairview
  • SM City North EDSA
  • SM Megamall

  • Helping a community of artists

And in the south of Metro Manila, the SM Mall of Asia family will be partnering with the Association of Foot and Mouth Artists in selling painted Christmas cards to the shoppers.

This is the second time SM Supermalls has started a holiday countdown campaign. In 2021, the biggest mall network in the Philippines showed the world more than a hundred ways of giving through 100 Days of Caring. Underserved communities surrounding the 76 SM malls were provided with their urgent needs through in-kind and monetary donations by the malls, its various business units, and the employees.

Dedicated fan, Marcus McClam is Jollibee Philadelphia’s first official customer on September 2, after waiting in line for more than nine hours.

Philadelphia is brimming with excitement when the happiest bee finally brings her signature cheers to the city for the first time.

“The Jollibee Philadelphia store is very special to us because it is our first location in the whole of the state of Pennsylvania, and we are deeply grateful for the appreciation of Philadelphians who came and made our opening day memorable. Serving new markets has always been an exciting mission for us and it has been integral to achieve our goal of becoming among the top five restaurants in the world. It has been a goal of ours to open a location in Philadelphia for some time and we are honored to be a part of this extraordinary city. We are truly humbled by the warm and joyful welcome we received on opening day, and we are grateful to be part of this dynamic city full of rich history, culture, and incredible food. With every store opening, it is an honor to continue introducing people to the Jollibee brand and we look forward to doing so as we expand across North America.~Maribeth Dela Cruz, President, Jollibee Group North America
