Run with a Purpose, Race for a Cause: How the PalawanPay Marathon brought El Nido one step closer to life-saving care

The Palawan Group of Companies (PGC), through its fast-growing e-wallet platform, PalawanPay, recently staged the popular PalawanPay Marathon in Puerto Princesa City as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.  The event gathered more than 2,100 runners, the most since it was founded as the Palawan Express Marathon in 2015.  Fueled by excitement and endurance, athletes from all across the Philippines, as well as from Australia and the United States, geared up for the marathon..

The PalawanPay Marathon is more than just a marathon; it demonstrates the PGC's strong commitment to corporate social responsibility, as revenues from the event were used to purchase an ambulance unit for the El Nido Community Hospital.  This donation is expected to help boost emergency response to health-related emergencies in one of Palawan's most popular and valued municipalities.

PGC’s Secret to Success: Staying True to Its Core Values

“The Palawan Group has always been rooted in the core value of malasakit (compassion). Every kilometer conquered in the PalawanPay Marathon is a symbol of how far we are willing to go to be of service to Filipinos – to Palawenos. As we celebrate 40 years of service, it is our greatest honor to go back to our roots and give back to the communities that journeyed with us since the beginning.” ~Korina Castro-Fernando, Chief Human Resources Officer

This sentiment is echoed by PGC Chief Operations Officer and 2025 PalawanPay Marathon Overall Committee Head, Roberto Ben Castro,

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Palawan Group of Companies. (The Palawan Group of Companies traces its roots here in Palawan, and you, Palawenos, have been with us through the years. We owe you, our Sukis, the success we enjoy today. Now as we look back to our humble beginnings, we hosted this meaningful marathon not just to boost the health of our runners, but also the health of an entire community. The proceeds from PalawanPay Marathon 2025 will be used to purchase an ambulance unit that we will donate to El Nido Community Hospital). (There have been cases where patients had to wait an entire day just to be transported to a larger hospital here in Puerto Princesa. We hope this ambulance will ensure better healthcare for our fellow Palawenos in El Nido). ~Roberto Ben Castro, PGC Chief Operations Officer and 2025 PalawanPay Marathon Overall Committee Head

Dr. Robert Angelo A. Arrieta, Chief of Hospital, and Ms. Rosana Sanoy, Hospital Administrator, both attended the ceremonial key turnover.  The ceremonial key symbolizes a brand new Toyota Hi-Ace, which will now serve as the hospital's official ambulance.

40 Years, One Vision

The PalawanPay Marathon is part of the "Ikaw Pa Rin ang Number One: Palawan at 40" celebration, which honors four decades of dedicated service to its Sukis (loyal customers), founded on trust, service, and compassion.

More than a business milestone, it reinforces the company's commitment to provide Filipinos with accessible and dependable financial solutions while creating a long-term difference in the lives of the communities we serve.  As more than 2,100 runners crossed the finish line, they represented not only physical endurance, but also the strength of a company that is proudly gawang Pilipino, para sa Pilipino (by Filipinos, for Filipinos) and continues to run alongside its Sukis, empowering communities and reaffirming that, even after 40 years, PGC is only getting started.

Now You Can Send Money Abroad with PalawanPay and Palawan Express Pera Padala — Affordable, Fast, and Hassle-Free

For many Filipinos, sending money is more than a transaction; it is a lifeline.  It helps loved ones, fulfills obligations, and maintains strong connections across borders.  Whether for tuition, medical expenditures, business demands, or daily living expenses, the demand for dependable foreign remittances grows.  While receiving money from abroad is common, transferring money from the Philippines to other countries has historically been difficult.  High prices, difficult restrictions, and limited access frequently get in the way, whether it's a small company owner paying an international supplier, a family assisting an OFW with urgent expenses, or a student abroad who needs support from home.

Recognizing these everyday challenges, the Palawan Group of Companies (PGC), the trusted name behind the fast-growing e-wallet PalawanPay and the multi-awarded Palawan Express Pera Padala (PEPP), has launched Pera Padala Abroad.  This new service marks a watershed moment: PalawanPay is now one of the first e-wallets in the Philippines to provide outbound international remittance, allowing customers to send money overseas at any time and from any location using their phones.  No long lines.  No complex forms.  Just a few clicks to help loved ones, no matter where they are in the world.

Send Money Abroad—Anytime, Anywhere

Pera Padala Abroad enables sending money abroad as simple as sending it domestically.  Users of the PalawanPay app can send funds overseas immediately from their mobile phones.  For those who prefer in-person transactions, the service is also available at over 3,500 approved PEPP branches around the country, making it accessible whether you're in a city or a province.

PalawanPay eliminates the need for extensive paperwork and banking formalities.  You only need a validated PalawanPay account to send.  And, true to Palawan's brand promise, it's "mura, mabilis, at walang kuskos balungos" (cheap, fast, and hassle-free), the same level of service that PGC has proudly provided for 40 years.

Send to Over 190 Countries with Affordable Rates Starting at Just ₱300

Pera Padala Abroad offers prices starting at ₱300 for sending to bank accounts, e-wallets, and cash pick-up.  With competitive conversion rates, your recipient receives more value.  Funds sent in pesos can be changed to the destination country's local currency or held in the recipient's preferred currency, providing flexibility and convenience.

Transactions are processed in real-time.  When you obtain your reference number, the money are transferred promptly, giving both the sender and the recipient piece of mind.  This seamless international service is backed by Ria, a reputable global remittance network with over 190 countries and over 500,000 pick-up locations globally.

PalawanPay at the Biyaya Festival: Using Financial Innovation to Strengthen Filipino Heritage

Palawan Group of Companies is dedicated to empowering Filipinos in the agricultural and cultural sectors by providing accessible financial services and promoting financial inclusion.

PalawanPay proudly serves as the official e-wallet and payment platform for the Biyaya Sustainable Living Festival, which celebrates local communities and Filipino history.  The three-day festival celebrated the country's cultural diversity through major pillars known as the Three Cs: the bold flavors of local coffee, the legacy of Filipino culture, and the craftsmanship of Filipino couture.  By sponsoring this event, PalawanPay helped to boost local businesses and preserve the country's unique identity.

Building on the popularity of the well-known Manila Coffee Festival, the Biyaya Festival in Parqal Aseana City emphasised the importance of honoring the Philippines' unique local goods and cultural customs.  Visitors were treated to unlimited cups of locally brewed coffee, sustainable fashion displays, live mural contests, and cultural performances, all while participating in thought-provoking talks about sustainability and tradition.

PalawanPay recognized the importance of financial literacy in empowering agricultural communities and extended their service beyond payments.  The company conducted workshops on financial literacy for coffee, cacao, and coconut farmers, as well as traditional weavers.  These programs included free insurance and educational seminars about the Palawan Group of Companies (PGC) services, which provided local people with critical financial knowledge and practical skills for a more secure, sustainable future.

The agreement guaranteed that industrious farmers and weavers got their money immediately, safely, and affordably through PalawanPay.  With the support of over 10,000 Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala outlets and branches, the platform enabled seamless transactions—whether via branch pick-up or in-app transfers—delivering on its signature promise: "Pwede sa branch, pwede sa app." PalawanPay made it easier for communities to access their well-earned income by offering a "mura, mabilis, at walang kuskos-balungos" (affordable, fast, and hassle-free) experience.

Throughout the event, PalawanPay made transactions accessible, convenient, and secure for both sellers and tourists, allowing them to completely enjoy the festivities without worrying about money.  PalawanPay is more than simply a digital payment platform; it represents the essential Filipino values of community, tradition, and patriotism, making it the ideal financial partner for an event promoting sustainability and cultural preservation.

“PalawanPay has been with our farmers and artisans from the very beginning, making it easier for them to receive their hard-earned income securely and directly. As the partner of the Biyaya Sustainable Living Festival, PalawanPay ensures that every purchase made truly goes straight to the hands of those who nurture our heritage—our coffee farmers, weavers, and artisans. It's more than just a payment system; it's a tool that empowers communities and sustains livelihoods.” ~Rich Watanabe, Festival Director at Biyaya Sustainable Living

Lilian Castro-Selda, Executive Vice President and CFO of PGC, shared the inspiring journey of the Palawan Group of Companies, from its humble beginnings as a single-branch pawnshop to its growth into one of the most trusted financial institutions, now dedicated to giving back to the community.

"One of our core missions is uplifting communities through meaningful corporate social responsibility—focusing on education, sports development, and environmental protection. We remain steadfast in promoting financial inclusion for farmers, artisans, and small businesses, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive in an evolving economy.” ~Lilian Castro-Selda, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of PGC

PalawanPay is happy to be a "gawang Pinoy, para sa Pinoy" (made by Filipinos, for Filipinos) software that promotes local industry and Filipino traditions.  Equipping farmers and weavers with crucial financial tools and information promotes long-term livelihoods while also strengthening the cultural foundations that keep the Filipino spirit alive.

Fire Prevention Month: Protect Your Home and Stay Prepared with Palawan ProtekTODO

In the Philippines, March is Fire Prevention Month, which is officially acknowledged by Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A. The goal of this statewide program is to improve fire safety awareness.  With fire occurrences often rising during the summer, this yearly commemoration serves as a timely reminder of the devastation caused by flames and the importance of preventive actions to protect lives and properties.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), fire incidents increased from 16,387 cases in 2023 to 18,217 in 2024 – a whopping 10.6%. This underscores the need for stronger fire readiness efforts. Here are five measures to help you secure your loved ones:

1. Keep Electrical Systems in Check

Faulty wiring and overloaded outlets are among the leading causes of residential fires. Ensure electrical systems are well-maintained, avoid plugging too many devices into a single outlet, and replace damaged cords immediately.

2. Practice Safe Cooking Habits
Kitchen fires are among the most common household fire incidents. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable materials away from stoves, and ensure gas tanks are properly installed and maintained.

3. Store Flammable Materials Properly
Households and businesses should store flammable substances, such as gasoline, paint, and chemicals, in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources. Proper storage reduces the risk of accidental ignition and fire outbreaks.  Additionally, never place curtains, papers, or clothes near stoves, heaters, or candles – small oversights can lead to major disasters.

4. Invest in a Fire Extinguisher
Equip your home or business with a fire extinguisher. This will allow you to respond quickly to small fires before they escalate into a full-blown disaster.

5. Get insurance to reduce the financial impact of a fire incident
Unfortunately, incidents can still occur, and they can strip your family of your hard-earned assets and savings. This is why getting insured is important. Contrary to popular belief, insurance doesn’t have to be costly—going without it is what can be truly expensive.

“Insurance, in general, is often underrated in our country. While some people recognize its value, many still overlook certain types of coverage. Most individuals tend to focus on health, life, and personal accident insurance, but they may be missing out on the crucial protection that fire cash assistance offers. Although less common, this type of coverage provides invaluable peace of mind in the event of the unexpected. This Fire Prevention Month, we encourage everyone not only to learn how to prevent fires but also to be prepared in case they occur.” ~Meijhen Maulanin, Brand Manager of Palawan Group of Companies' microinsurance arm, ProtekTODO

For only Php 99, Palawan ProtekTODO Fire 99 offers up to Php 30,000 in fire financial assistance and a Php 10,000 accidental death benefit, providing a cheap and dependable safety net for individuals and families.

Fire prevention starts with awareness, but true preparedness means having a safety net when the unexpected happens. While we take precautions to avoid fires, accidents can still happen—often when we least expect them. Get Palawan ProtekTODO Fire 99 today at any Palawan Pawnshop—Palawan Express Pera Padala branch, via the PalawanPay App, or through the official Palawan ProtekTODO stores on Lazada and Shopee.
